Huskers Storm Past Cyclones, 3-0

Ames, Iowa ? Melissa Elmer tied a season-high with 10 blocks, leading fourth-ranked Nebraska to a 30-19, 30-16, 30-20 win over Iowa State in front of a crowd of 1,910 at Hilton Coliseum Saturday afternoon.

The Huskers (19-1, 13-0 Big 12) held Iowa State to -.089 hitting, the lowest percentage by a Husker opponent since the 2000 season, as Nebraska rolled to its 16th consecutive win. The Cyclones (8-14, 1-12 Big 12) became the fifth team to be held below .000 this season, as their total was the lowest since Creighton was held to -.103 hitting on Oct. 3, 2000. It was also the lowest by a Big 12 opponent in John Cook’s five years at Nebraska, topping the .-051 that ISU hit against NU in 2002.

Elmer led the Huskers with 10 blocks, matching her output in the teams’ first meeting two weeks ago, as the Huskers established a season high with 17.5 blocks. Sarah Pavan and Tracy Stalls also added five blocks apiece, as eight different Huskers had at least one block in the sweep.

NU, which has won all 65 meetings in the series including the last 21 by sweep, also had eight service aces, including three by Dani Mancuso and two by Stalls.

"Our blocking and serving was great tonight," Nebraska Coach John Cook said. "Any time you hold a team to negative hitting, you have to be pleased with the blocking and defense."

Jennifer Saleaumua paced the Huskers, setting match highs in both kills (eight) and digs (18) while becoming just the seventh player to reach 1,000 career digs. She now has 1,015 career digs, and is the first Husker in school history to reach 1,000 digs before her senior season.

"When you think of all the players who have played here, to know that Jennifer was the first player to reach 1,000 digs before her senior year is really a great accomplishment," Cook said.

The Huskers overcame a slow start in game one, using a strong block and strong serving to post a 30-19 win. The Huskers had five service aces and held ISU to -.094 hitting, closing the game with a 10-2 spurt. With the score tied at eight, NU used a 4-0 spurt to take the lead for good as Stalls’ ace started a run of three straight Husker points. ISU got within 20-17, but could get no closer, as the Huskers’ pulled away down the stretch. NU had a 5-0 advantage in blocks, as Elmer had five blocks in game one alone.

The Huskers spotted ISU a 4-0 lead in game two, but the Huskers stormed back with a 30-16 victory. NU shut down the Cyclone attack, as ISU hit -.148 and had 14 errors. The match was tied at 11 before Elmer took over, recording two blocks and a kill in a decisive 8-0 run, helping NU take a 19-11 advantage.

Christina Houghtelling came off the bench to spark the Huskers early in game three, drilling three early kills to help NU race to a 9-2 lead. ISU trailed 16-9 before rallying for four straight points to get within 16-13 and force a Husker timeout. ISU trailed 17-15 before kills by Pavan and Saleaumua and a service ace by Michelle Lynch gave NU a five-point lead and forced an ISU timeout. NU continued the run following the timeout with four more points, taking a 24-14 lead on a Saleaumua kill and ending ISU’s best threat.

The Huskers received strong performances off the bench in game three from Houghtelling, Ally Rebholz and Michelle Lynch, as NU hit .355 in the finale. Houghtelling had all five kills in the finale, while Rebholz (three kills and two blocks) and Lynch (seven assists) all saw extensive action.

"Christina, Ally and Michelle came in with a lot of energy and got us going offensively in game three," Cook said.

The Huskers return home to begin a four-game homestand Wednesday, Nov. 3, as Nebraska takes on Texas Tech. A limited number of general admission tickets remain for the match, which could be the 50th consecutive sellout at the NU Coliseum. The match will be carried on the Pinnacle Sports Network, including B107.3 FM in Lincoln, and carried live state-wide on Nebraska Educational Television.
