No. 5 Huskers Sweep Oklahoma

Lincoln ? Christina Houghtelling and Dani Mancuso combined for 22 kills on .441 hitting, as the fifth-ranked Nebraska volleyball team swept Oklahoma, 30-17, 30-22, 30-16 Saturday afternoon in front of a sellout crowd of 4,108 at the NU Coliseum Saturday afternoon.

Houghtelling established her second career high in the last three matches with a match-high 15 kills on .433 hitting and nine digs, while Mancuso came off the bench to deliver seven hills and hit .463 while playing the entire third game.

"It’s a rare occurrence to have both left-side hitters above. 400," Nebraska Coach John Cook said. "Dani (Busboom) did a good job of setting them, and to have both over .400 is very impressive."

The Huskers, who improved to 12-1 overall and 7-0 in the Big 12, outhit Oklahoma, .351-.086 in posting their 14th straight win over the Sooners, who dropped to 8-7 overall and remained winless in seven Big 12 matches.

Freshman Sarah Pavan joined Houghtelling in double figures in kills with 14 on .458 hitting, while Melissa Elmer added seven kills and five blocks. In all, the Huskers out-blocked OU, 11-6, as setter Dani Busboom tied a career high with five blocks and added her eighth double-double of the year with 41 assists and 11 digs.

The Huskers started slowly before closing game one on a decisive 14-3 run to win the opener, 30-17. Oklahoma was within 16-14 before a block by Elmer and Busboom trigggered a 9-1 Husker run. Elmer served five straight points to give NU a decisive 25-15 lead after a pair of Houghtelling kills, while Houghtelling finished game one with six kills on .545 hitting.

"We started a little sluggish, but after the media timeout, we went into third and fourth gear," Cook said.

Nebraska took control of game two early, jumping to a 6-1 lead and never looking back in a 30-22 win. Houghtelling and Jennifer Saleaumua each had two quick kills in the spurt, as the Huskers were in control for the entire contest. Oklahoma closed to within 14-10, but two kills by Houghtelling and a pair of Sooner hitting errors led to a 5-1 run that gave NU a comfortable 19-11 lead. Pavan had eight kills on 11 swings in game two with the final swing ending the 30-22 victory.

Mancuso, who came in late in game two, starred in the Huskers’ 30-16 win in the finale, as she had seven kills, two aces and three blocks in helping Nebraska hit a blistering .452. The Sooners were within 16-11, but could not get any closer, as Mancuso keyed a 4-0 spurt that gave the Huskers all the room they would need

The Huskers will head west on Sunday, traveling to North Platte High School for a match against Creighton. First serve is set for 3 p.m. as a capacity crowd of 2,400 is expected. Fans who can’t watch the match in person can listen to the broadcast on the Pinnacle Sports Network, including B107.3 FM in Lincoln, or can watch live for free on Huskers.com (high speed connection needed).
