Lincoln - Sophomore Lauren Bailey set a Devaney Center Pool record in the 1,000-yard freestyle, and Nebraska won 10 of 14 events, as the Huskers defeated Truman State 165-95 on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, NU improved to 3-0 in dual action this season.
Bailey recorded a time of 9:57.84 in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Her time was a personal best and dominated the rest of the field by nearly 25 seconds. Bailey also won the 400-IM in 4:26.43.
"There are some really good distance swimmers who have swam in this pool and this program," Nebraska Head Coach Pablo Morales said. "Michelle Butcher was a great distance freestyler for Nebraska, and they have also had some great teams come through here like Georgia. It was an outstanding and very impressive race."
Several other Huskers also posted impressive times in their first home dual. Each race included at least one NU swimmer who set season bests.
Sophomore Kate Wheeler led the Huskers in their 165-point performance with three individual wins, including the 200-free (1:51.16), 100-free (52.61) and 500-free (4:56.93). All three times were season-best marks for Wheeler, who improved her individual record to 7-0 on the season.
Sophomore Casey Schnack and freshman Betsy Grover set team season bests, as Schnack won the 100-yard backstroke in 59.01 while Grover won the 100-yard fly in 57.25.
Junior Alex King won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.46 and senior Diana Torres won the 200-yard fly in 2:06.56 to round out individual wins for Nebraska.
The Huskers also won the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Schnack, Rachel Schlatter, Grover and Lynn Siemert turned in a winning time of 1:47.22.
"We swam incredibly well, beyond expections," Morales said. "We made this a mental focus for us to do well against Truman State. They have outstanding swimmers, and it was great to see our swimmers focused and ready for the meet."
Truman State won the Division I-AA national championship last season. Nebraska's win over the Bulldogs marked the second straight season that NU defeated Truman State and the first time since the 1997-98 season that the Huskers have started the season 3-0 in dual competition.
Nebraska takes a break from dual competition to travel to the Minnesota Invitational next Friday for a three-day meet. Competition begins on Friday at noon in Minneapolis.
