No. 3 Huskers Roll over Red Raiders

Lincoln ? Melissa Elmer and Sarah Pavan combined for 27 kills on .558 hitting, as third-ranked Nebraska celebrated its 50th consecutive sellout at the NU Coliseum in grand style with a 30-10, 30-14, 30-22 victory over Texas Tech Wednesday evening.

The Huskers (20-1, 14-0 Big 12) thrilled a sellout crowd of 4,110 with a dominant effort, holding Texas Tech in negative hitting number the entire match, as the Red Raiders (8-12, 4-10 Big 12) finished with a -.055 hitting percentage in the loss ? the sixth opponent to be held in negative numbers this season.

Elmer matched her season high with 13 kills on .579 hitting and added five blocks, while Pavan turned in match highs in kills (14), blocks (five) and service aces (three) while hitting .542 on just 24 swings.

The Huskers were sharp in nearly every facet, hitting .324 and out-blocking Texas Tech, 10-4, while adding a season-high 10 service aces in recording their 17th consecutive win. NU also held Texas Tech, who was second in the Big 12 in service aces, to none in posting its 17th straight win over Texas Tech.

The overwhelming effort pleased Nebraska Head Coach John Cook, as the Huskers began a stretch of three matches, including tilts with nationally ranked Kansas State and Colorado State, in five days at the NU Coliseum.

"Tonight, we were focused," Cook said. "We trained well this week and we were refreshed. It seems like the last three weeks, we’ve been fading and it showed against Iowa State. But tonight, we were focused, refreshed and executing at a high level."

The Huskers ended any suspense early in game one, scoring the first seven points of the match and jumping to an 11-1 lead en route to a 30-10 laugher. The Huskers were nearly flawless, hitting .481 as a team, while Dani Busboom had 14 of her match-high 35 assists in the opener. Pavan had six kills in the opener, while Elmer had five on just six swings.

"I think we were connecting better tonight," Elmer said about Busboom’s performance. "We’ve been connecting so well this year, but it was more consistent in this match. Tonight, we were just on, and it was awesome to get to that point."

The Huskers spotted Texas Tech a 4-0 lead in game two, but the lead didn’t last long, as NU went on an 11-1 run to take an 11-5 lead. The Red Raiders closed to within 13-11, but consecutive kills by Tracy Stalls sparked a 7-0 run that put the Huskers comfortably ahead. Jennifer Saleaumua had two of NU’s four service aces in the run, as the Huskers closed out a 30-14 win.

In the finale, the Huskers led from start to finish in posting a 30-22 win. Tech was within 10-6 before the Huskers put the game out of reach with a 9-3 spurt, including a pair of kills by Christina Houghtelling, while Tracy Stalls served four straight Husker points during the run. NU out-hit Tech, .263-.024 in the finale, as Houghtelling had all five of her kills in the finale.

Kelly Johnson led Texas Tech with 10 kills on .049 hitting and two blocks, as she totaled nearly half of Texas Tech’s 22 kills as a team. Of the 13 Red Raiders who saw action, only three hit above .000, as Kiley Lyons (six kills on .053 hitting) and Nina Miller (one kill on .333 hitting.) were the only other Texas Tech players to finish in positive numbers.

The Huskers will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 6, as they take on No. 18 Kansas State beginning at 6 p.m. The match will be carried on B107.3 FM in Lincoln, and shown state-wide on Nebraska Educational Television.
