Huskers Show Conditioning, Aggressiveness in Wrestle-Off

The no. 3/4/3 Nebraska wrestling team made its public debut with its annual wrestle-offs Friday night at the Devaney Center.

Head coach Mark Manning, entering his fifth year at NU, was pleased with his wrestlers’ level of conditioning two weeks before the Huskers’ season opening dual with nationally-ranked Hofstra.

"I was really pleased with our conditioning. We’re in really good shape for this time of the year," said Manning.

It was also the debut of twelve freshmen to the Nebraska wrestling program.

"Our freshmen showed good fight and spirit for their first time out," Manning said.

The wrestle-offs also marked the return of heavweight Mitch Manstedt. The senior from Clarks, Neb. was sidelined early in the 2003-04 season after sustaining a knee injury in practice leading up to the Boise State dual. He and 2004 NU Redshirt of the Year Jon May will likely split time at the heavyweight spot.

"Manstedt did good against May. Both will see action this year. It’s important to have two guys at that spot," said Manning.

The Huskers open their 2004-05 wrestling season on Friday, Nov. 19 against Hofstra at the Devaney Center Track. The dual will start at 7 p.m.
