Huskers Win Two in Oregon

The No. 3 Nebraska wrestling team swept a pair of duals in the state of Oregon Saturday. The Huskers defeated Oregon State, 36-3, and No. 18 Oregon, 39-10.

"I thought our guys wrestled hard today," said coach Mark Manning. "We wrestled with great intensity and did a lot of things in our matches that we have been working on in practice."

Four NU wrestlers were 2-0 on the day in dual matches. At 165 pounds, Jacob Klein earned victories by major decision and by fall, while B.J. Wright won two matches by technical fall at 157 pounds. Matt Murray and Travis Pascoe also won a pair of matches on the day.

Nebraska won the first six matches of its dual against Oregon State. The first four of those victories earned NU bonus points. It started with a 13-3 major decision win by David Ingalls over Orlando Perez at 149 pounds. Then, Wright won by technical fall over the Beavers’ Joel Gibson, 20-5, 22 seconds into the third period. After Klein defeated Anthony Weber in a 13-5 major decision, Kyle Gubbels won by major decision over Steve Grayson of Oregon State, 10-2.

Travis Pascoe followed that with a win over Dan Pitsch, 14-9, at 184 pounds. At 197 pounds, B.J. Padden won by major decision over Travis Gardner, 22-11. Nebraska’s win streak stopped at heavyweight, as Jon May, wrestling in first varsity dual match, was defeated by Ty Watterson, 8-3.

The Huskers rebounded in the 125 pound match, as Matt Keller pinned Eric Stevenson 1:37 into the second period of their match. Dominick Moyer won in overtime, defeating Bobby Pfennigs, 4-2. At 141 pounds, Matt Murray closed the night with a 7-3 victory over Clint Leonard.

Nebraska started its dual against Oregon in similarly-hot fashion. The Huskers earned bonus points in all of the first five matches, en route to their fourth straight dual win.

Chris Nedens started the win string with a major decision victory over Stewart Bogart, 16-7, at 149 pounds. Wright followed that with a dominating 19-3 major decision triumph over Cyle Hartzell. Wright scored 12 of the match’s first 13 points and never looked back on the way to the win. The Huskers would pin their next two opponents in the first period, with Klein pinning Mark Allen at the 1:44 mark in the first frame and Marc Harwood pinning Brian Sauvain 1:27 into their 174-pound match. Pascoe won by technical fall over Chet McBee, 22-5. Pascoe clinched the technical fall with a takedown with 1:25 left in the second period.

At 197 pounds, Scott Barker gave the Ducks their first win of the evening, defeating Padden 9-1. Mitch Manstedt won his match at heavyweight over Cody Parker, 6-3. At 125 pounds, Derek Pirner pinned Joey Lucas with 29 seconds left in the first period. Martin Mitchell gave Oregon their second bonus-point victory of the night, pinning Moyer 1:30 into the match. Murray gave NU their seventh bonus-point win of the night with a 16-5 major decision win over Nate Gipson.

The Huskers are now 4-0 on the season. Their next action is Sunday, Dec.12 at 3 p.m. at Boise State.
