T?trault Takes Eighth at Elite Canada

<?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Nebraska freshman gymnast Stephen T?trault finished eighth of eighteen competitors with an overall score of 98.754 in the senior men’s division of the 2004 Elite Canada nationals in Calgary last weekend.  T?trault’s performance targets him as a prospective member of the Canadian National team.  <?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

The two-day meet was highlighted by T?trault’s solid vault scores of 9.35 and 9.134 on a routine that he had not previously competed.  The marks earned him a third-place finish in the event and Nebraska assistant coach, Chuck Chmelka, who accompanied T?trault, said he was extraordinarily pleased with the results.

“Stephen (T?trault) did a brand new vault and wound up third,” Chmelka said.  “Any time a gymnast can do that at this level, it’s just absolutely outstanding.”

A native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, T?trault moved to Lincoln in 2000 and graduated from Lincoln East before beginning work with the Huskers this fall.  He is a former member of the Canadian Junior National team and received an invitation to the U.S. Junior National training camp earlier this year.  One of two freshmen on the Nebraska roster this season, he will compete mainly on the pommel horse, vault, parallel bars and high bar before vying for an all-around spot next year.
