Huskers Continue Spring Season in California

The Husker golf team completes its Spring Break trip on the West Coast, taking part in the Stevinson Ranch Invitational in Stevinson, Calif., on Monday and Tuesday. The Huskers are one of 14 teams in the tournament, hosted by the University of Colorado.

The tournament will begin on Monday with 36 holes on the par-72, 7,205-yard Stevinson Ranch Golf Club layout. The final 18 holes will be contested on Tuesday morning.

The tournament is a crucial event for the Huskers who still have hopes of qualifying for an NCAA regional later this spring. Several district opponents are in the field, as well as Big 12 foes Colorado, Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State and Missouri.

The Stevinson Ranch field includes six top 100 teams, according to GolfWeek rankings. Leading the way is 39th-ranked Kansas and 43rd-ranked Wichita State, who dominated the Pioneer Golf Classic last week, a tournament in which Nebraska finished in a tie for fourth. Other top 100 teams in this week's field are Kansas State (73), Denver (68), Colorado (81) and Missouri (86).

Coach Bill Spangler's team had an outstanding effort at the Pioneer Golf Classic last weekend, firing a season-low 283 in round two and a season-best 863 total for the tournament. Nebraska will have the same lineup in action in California, led by sophomore Brady Schnell. The Omaha native put his name in the Nebraska record book last week in Arizona, carding a seven-under par 65 in the second round to tie the school single-round record. Schnell's round marked the fourth 65 in school history and helped him to an eight-under par 208 total, good for a tie for second place.

Sophomore Drew Reynolds continued his solid play with a tie for 21st place, while junior Judd Cornell finished in a tie for 40th place. Freshman Tyler Bishop played in his first tournament of the spring and while he finished tied for 57th place, he posted consecutive rounds of 73 to close the tournament. Junior Kent Schreiner will be Nebraska's fifth golfer this week.

Huskers Post Season-Best Scores at Pioneer Classic
Nebraska posted a three-round total of 863 at the Pioneer Golf Classic last week in Goodyear, Ariz., good for a tie for fourth place in the 15-team field. Nebraska's three-round total was its best of the 2004-05 season and its second-round 283 tied the Huskers' season-low team score.

Brady Schnell posted NU's best individual tournament of the season, finishing in a tie for second place at 208. Schnell, who tied the school record with a second-round 65, posted a 70 in the final round. Schnell's 65 matched the school record, previously set on two occasion by Jamie Rogers in 1998 and once by Knox Jones in the early 1980s. He finished 13 strokes behind individual champion Judd Easterling of Wichita State, who posted a remarkable 21-under par 195 total.

Next Up
Nebraska will take a week off following the CU-Stevinson Ranch Invitational, before resuming its spring season on April 4-5 at the Branson Creek invitational in Branson, Mo.
