Nebraska Ties for Second in California

The <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Nebraska men’s golf team completed an outstanding Spring Break trip with a tie for second place at the Stevinson Ranch Invitational in Stevinson, Calif., on Tuesday. The Huskers stood in third place after two rounds and their final-round 308 was good for an 892 total, tying Kansas State for second, 20 shots behind team champion Kansas.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

The final round was played in cool and windy weather on Tuesday at Stevinson Ranch Golf Club, and the scores reflected the difficult conditions. Just two teams broke 300 on Tuesday and Nebraska’s 308 team score was the fourth-best score of the day. Kansas State shot the day’s lowest score with a 297 to surge into a tie for second after entering the day in eighth place. Nebraska and the Wildcats were a single shot in front of fourth-place Missouri, while Colorado, Denver and Wichita State were another shot back at 894.

Sophomore Brady Schnell continues to pace the Huskers this spring. Schnell posted a 77 in Tuesday’s final round, and his 218 total left him a tie for sixth place with Denver’s James Love. The sixth-place finish marked the third time in four spring tournaments that Schnell has finished sixth or better. Kansas’ Kevin Ward captured the individual title with a three-round total of eight-under par 208, six shots better than Ben Kern of Kansas State.

Junior Judd Cornell posted a one-over 73 on Tuesday, tying for the third-best score in the final round. His 220 total left him in a tie for 11th place with Wichita State’s Jesse Schulte. Drew Reynolds carded an 80 on Tuesday and finished tied for 23rd at 227. Tyler Bishop and Kent Schreiner rounded out the NU lineup, tying for 52nd place after shooting rounds of 80 and 78, respectively, on Tuesday.

The Huskers began their Spring Break trip last week with a fourth-place finish at the Pioneer Golf Classic in Goodyear, Ariz. Today’s tie for second-place marked Nebraska’s best finish since opening the 2004-05 campaign with a victory in its own Fairway Club Invitational at Firethorn Golf Club last September.
