Lincoln -- University of Nebraska Head Coach Mike Anderson announced the signing of left-handed pitcher Wes Simmons (Owasso, Okla.) to a National Letter-of-Intent to play for the University of Nebraska baseball program next season.
The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder helped Tulsa (Okla.) Lincoln Christian to a 29-4 record and the school’s third consecutive Oklahoma Christian Schools Athletic Association championship last weekend.
"Wes is a high school left-hander who we targeted early in the spring," Nebraska Associate Head Coach/Pitching Coach Rob Childress said. "He has a projectable frame that will continue to grow in our program. Wes has a smooth delivery and already has an excellent command and knowledge of the strike zone. Wes’ ability to consistently throw strikes will give him a chance to be a contributor next season for us."
An all-state honoree for Coach Pat Foster in 2004, Simmons compiled a 9-1 record with a 0.17 ERA, as he allowed one earned run in 48 innings pitched this season. Simmons, who selected Nebraska over Oral Roberts and Southwest Missouri State, also struck out 105 and walked 11 before earning the win in Lincoln Christian’s state title game last weekend.
Simmons, who intends to major in business administration, visited Lincoln during the Huskers’ series with Oklahoma State last month and was swayed by the "outstanding facilities and the coaches."
According to Coach Foster, Simmons’ command and three-pitch repertoire allowed him to enjoy an outstanding four-year career.
"He’s a lefty who throws in the upper 80s and has excellent command on the location of his fastball along with a curveball and changeup," Foster said.
Simmons, who was also chosen for the Oklahoma Senior Sunbelt select team, is the second high school pitcher to sign with Nebraska in this year’s recruiting class. He joins Ralston right-hander Mike Nihsen, who signed during the fall singing period.
