University of Nebraska Associate Head Coach Rob Childress was named the Head Coach of the Texas A&M baseball program on Wednesday.
Childress joined the Nebraska staff in January of 1998 and was promoted to Associate Head Coach in June of 2002, when Mike Anderson was named Head Coach. In his eight years at Nebraska, Childress played a major role in helping the Huskers to three Big 12 titles, four Big 12 Tournament titles and three College World Series appearances. He coached six pitchers to a combined eight first-team All-Big 12 awards, including three Big 12 Pitchers of the Year (Shane Komine in 2000-01 and Aaron Marsden in 2003).
Nebraska Head Coach Mike Anderson believes that Childress’ hiring is well-deserved and is appreciative in his role in helping Nebraska become one of the Big 12’s top programs over the last six years.
"I'm extremely happy for Rob as a friend and colleague,” Anderson said. His contributions to the Nebraska baseball program have included winning conference and regional championships along with College World Series appearances, while at the same time building great relationships and becoming part of a successful team. He's a great addition to the head coaching ranks of the Big 12, and I wish him nothing but the best, except when playing Nebraska."
In 2005, Childress’ staff led the Big 12 with a 2.69 ERA, a total which ranked second nationally and tied for second on NU’s single-season list. Five pitchers earned all-Big 12 recognition, including Johnny Dorn, a third-team All-American who was the league’s freshman pitcher of the year, and Joba Chamberlain, a first-team all-conference selection who was the league’s newcomer pitcher of the year.
