A total of 140 golfers hit the links at Wilderness Ridge last Sunday to raise money for the Julie Geis Memorial Scholarship. The event, which included silent and live auctions, in addition to the 35 foursomes participating in the Memorial Golf Tournament, raised more than $50,000 for the Geis Memorial Scholarship.
Those participating in the event did so in honor of Geis. A four-year letterwinner for the Husker softball team from 1976 to 1979, Geis was killed in the <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>WorldTradeCenter attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. The scholarship, which is awarded annually to a current member of the Nebraska softball team, was created in her memory with the goal of making it a fully endowed scholarship.
In order to fully endow the scholarship, $250,000 must be raised and the current total stands at nearly $200,000. Once fully endowed, the scholarship lives off the interest and ensures that both the scholarship and Julie Geis live on forever with the Nebraska softball program.
The 2005 Julie Geis Memorial Golf Tournament was the fourth annual event, and was an overwhelming success. The event was a true success, from the money raised to the fun-filled day, according to NU Head Coach Rhonda Revelle said.
“It was an outstanding day as we gathered to celebrate Julie’s birthday,” Revelle said. “This event has so much momentum because of the devotion of the Geis family and the love and admiration everyone had for Julie.
“Julie was a goal-oriented person and we intend to honor her competitive spirit by fully endowing the Julie Geis Memorial Scholarship by Aug. 14, 2006 (Julie’s birthday).”
Plans are already under way for the Fifth Annual Julie Geis Memorial Golf Tournament in 2006. For more information on Julie, the Julie Geis Memorial Scholarship and next year’s Julie Geis Memorial Golf Tournament as it becomes available, please visit Huskers.com.
