<?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Nebraska wrestling coach Mark Manning announced Friday the hiring of Jason Mester as NU’s strength and conditioning coach, while also announcing the promotion of Charles Burton to head assistant coach and Mike Greenfield to assistant coach.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>
Mester comes to Nebraska from Central Michigan, where he served as an assistant coach for the Chippewas, who finished 12th last year at the NCAA Championships. Before coaching, Mester was a two-time All-American and a three-time Mid-American Conference champion for CMU. Mester’s career winning percentage of .815 ranks third in Central Michigan wrestling history. Mester graduated from CMU in the spring of 2004 with a degree in recreation and outdoor management.
According to Manning, Mester has several characteristics necessary for success as a strength and conditioning coach.
“Jason brings a great deal of work ethic, mental toughness and determination to our program,” Manning said. “He’s a tremendous competitor and we’re pleased to have him on our staff.”
Mester is enthusiastic about the opportunity to join the Husker coaching staff.
“I’m excited about being a part of this program,” Mester said. “I’m looking forward to helping build success at Nebraska.”
Mester was named the strength and conditioning coach after Greenfield was promoted to an assistant coaching position. Greenfield, in his fourth season on the Nebraska staff, also graduated from Central Michigan and was a two-time All-American for the Chippewas.
Greenfield moves into the spot previously held by Burton, who was named the head assistant coach, filling the void left when Shawn Charles took the head coaching job at FresnoState. Burton enters his fourth season on the Nebraska staff and his sixth as a college assistant coach.
Nebraska will begin its 2005-06 season with a dual against BoiseState in Lincoln, Neb., on Friday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m.
