Lincoln ? All-American Melissa Elmer matched her season high with 12 kills, as No. 1 Nebraska swept Iowa State, 30-8, 30-24, 30-16 in front of a sellout crowd of 4,149 at the NU Coliseum on Saturday evening.
Elmer, a two-time All-American from Fort Wayne, Ind., had 12 kills on .632 hitting, establishing season bests in both categories, as the Huskers improved to 11-0 overall and 3-0 in the Big 12 with their ninth sweep in 11 matches. Elmer, who also had 12 kills against Pepperdine on Sept. 9, led NU with seven blocks, as the Huskers out-blocked ISU, 14-6.5 in a match-up of two of the league’s best blocking teams.
Elmer was one of three Huskers to record double figures in kills, as freshman Jordan Larson and Sarah Pavan added 15 and 13 kills, respectively. Pavan continued her torrid stretch, hitting .522 on 23 swings while adding seven blocks and matching a season high with three aces.
“Most great teams have one or two positions where they’re not very strong and they just have role players,” Iowa State Coach Christy Johnson said. “This team doesn’t seem to have people that just fill roles. They seem to have six people on the court who are all talented, physical, All-American players and that’s a really rare thing. I haven’t seen that much in the history of college volleyball.”
The 60th consecutive sellout at the NU Coliseum saw the Huskers blitz the Cyclones in the opener, as NU scored the first six points and rolled to a 30-8 victory. The Huskers hit .555 with one error, while holding ISU to -.167 hitting. Larson and Elmer each had five kills, while Elmer also chipped in four blocks, as ISU’s eight points were the second-fewest points NU has allowed in a game since the rally-scoring era and the fewest since Oklahoma was held to seven points on Nov. 16, 2002
The Huskers, who have won all 67 meetings with the Cyclones, including the last 22 by sweeps, struggled in game two before pulling away for a 30-24 win. The visitors used an early 5-0 spurt to gain an advantage and led 10-7 before the Huskers scored five unanswered points, to take an 11-10 lead on Larson’s service ace. The Cyclones were within 23-21, but an Elmer kill and a combined block from Jennifer Saleaumua and Tracy Stalls forced an ISU timeout. NU then pulled away, as Elmer and Larson combined on the game-ending block to send the Huskers to the locker room with a 2-0 lead.
“I thought that Iowa State was a little intimidated to start the match,” Nebraska Head Coach John Cook said. “We certainly played very well in the first game. Usually in volleyball, when you have a very good first game you tend to let down in the second game. Obviously we blocked well tonight, and (Dani) Mancuso came off the bench and got some great kills and kind of gave us a spark.”
Nebraska came out smoking in game three, hitting .459 in a 30-16 victory. Pavan, Larson and Mancuso, who entered midway through game three, had five kills apiece in the finale. Leading 11-7, the Huskers put the match away with a 10-2 run, taking a 21-9 advantage after consecutive kills by Elmer. The Huskers eventually pushed the lead to 15 points before cruising to the win.
Erin Boeve led ISU (8-6, 2-2 Big 12) with 10 kills and five blocks, as the Cyclones saw their two-match winning streak snapped. The Cyclones hit just .029, marking the 10th time in 11 matches that NU held and opponent under .200.
The Huskers return to action Wednesday, Sept. 28, when they travel to Oklahoma to take on the Sooners. First serve is set for 7 p.m. and the match will be carried on B107.3 FM in Lincoln and Omaha and on Huskers.com. The match will also be carried on HuskersNside.
