The <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Nebraska men's golf team will travel to Ruston, La., as Louisiana Tech plays host to the team at the par 72, 7,100-yard Squire Creek Country Club for the Louisiana Tech/Squire Creek Classic. Action in the tournament begins with 36 holes on Monday, followed by the third and final round on Tuesday.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>
Joining Louisiana Tech and the Huskers in the 17-field will be Arkansas St., Centenary, Houston, Louisiana-Lafayette, Mississippi St., North Texas, Ole Miss, Rice, Sam Houston St., South Alabama, Southern Miss, Stephen F. Austin, Tulane, UT-Arlington, and Western Kentucky.
Huskers Place 5th at Xavier Invitational
The Nebraska men’s golf team earned its lowest score of the season, finishing with an 862 (296-278-288) at the Xavier Invitational at the par-72, 6,921-yard Oasis Golf Club in Loveland, Ohio, on Tuesday.
The Huskers’ tied for fifth with IndianaUniversity (289-284-289) in a field of 19 teams, marking NU’s best finish since winning the Fairway Club Invitational on Sept. 12.
The Huskers were in seventh through 36 holes of the tournament with the top four golfers scoring under par, but closed strongly, moving up two spots as three golfers finished at or under par.
Junior Brady Schnell led the team with a 211 (72-71-68), tying him for ninth in the tournament. His final score of 211 is a one-stroke improvement on his previous season low of 212 at the Fairway Club Invitational. Schnell also was second in the tournament in par-five scoring, finishing at 4.17, or 10-under par.
Junior Drew Reynolds (75-69-72) and senior Judd Cornell (75-68-73) each scored 216 in spots two and three for the team and tied for 23rd. Reynolds score is six strokes below his previous season best of 222, set at the Memphis Intercollegiate Golf Classic on Oct. 3.
Junior Ryan Lenahan finished with 223 (74-70-79), placing him in 54th for the tournament, while junior Ty Capps finished with 230 (78-77-75), placing him in a tie for 78th and securing a 17-stroke improvement on his season low, shot at the Fairway Club Invitational. His score of 75 on the final 18 holes of the tournament marked the first top-four team finish and scoring mark for Capps.
As a team, the Huskers were second in the tournament in par-four scoring at 4.09, or 13-over par. The team was also fourth in birdies, snagging 55, and eighth in pars with 156.
The Huskers were within one stroke of fourth-place Wisconsin with an 861 (283-289-289). Austin Peay (276-288-279) and Xavier (283-278-282) finished the tournament tied at first with 843. The two teams went into a playoff and Austin Peay won the title on the second hole. Rounding out the top three teams was Louisville, which totaled an 844 (281-276-287).
