Huskers Win Colorado State Tournament

Fort Collins, Colo. - The Nebraska softball team went 3-1 and captured the team championship at the Colorado State Tournament over the weekend in its second of three tournaments this fall.

The Huskers dropped the first game of the tournament, 2-0, to host Colorado State before rebounding for three consecutive victories. In the loss to CSU, freshman right-hander Molly Hill struck out 12 batters, but NU's offense was unable to produce a run.

In the second game of the day on Saturday, Nebraska bounced back with a 5-2 victory over Utah. Junior right-hander Ashley DeBuhr struck out eight while tossing a four-hitter. Offensively, senior Lizzy Aumua went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

NU's most dramatic victory of the tournament came in its first game Sunday. Facing Utah for the second time, the Huskers pulled out a 2-1 win. In the fourth inning, Nebraska got on the board when junior Carmen Kier led off with a double to right-center and advanced to third on a sacrifice from senior KoKo Tacha. Kier then came home on a hit from senior Jessica Yoachim. The game-winning run crossed the plate when Yoachim was caught in a rundown and freshman Meghan Mullin alertly came home.

In the circle, Hill struck out seven while picking up the victory.

Nebraska closed out the tournament with a 9-0 run-rule victory over Colorado State to capture the tournament title. DeBuhr starred offensively with a home run and tossed a four-hitter while striking out five. The Husker offense came alive in the win with Kier going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs and senior Katie Linke also producing two RBIs. Yoachim, Aumua and freshman Crystal Carwile each recorded two hits.

NU Head Coach Rhonda Revelle was pleased with her team's effort on the weekend and the way they responded after losing the first game of the tournament.

"I really felt like we got better as the weekend went on," Revelle said. "I felt like our team responded well (after the loss) and our best game was our last game."

Nebraska is off next weekend before wrapping up the fall season with the Husker Fall Classic at Bowlin Stadium Oct. 14-16.
