Huskers Open Season 3-0

Lincoln, Neb. - The Nebraska swimming and diving team wrapped up Parent’s Weekend with its third straight win of the season, as the Huskers cruised to a 160-95 win over Northern Iowa Saturday afternoon at the Devaney Center Pool.

The win marked the third straight season that Nebraska Head Coach Pablo Morales has led his squad to a 3-0 mark to start the season.

"It was another good day," Morales said. The girls came ready to swim fast and got up for the races which was great. We try to coach them to keep a consistent mental focus, and they have developed that sharp mental focus for their races."

Nine Huskers won individual events, led by a trio of victories from junior Lauren Bailey in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.65), the 200-yard backstroke (2:09.88) and 500-yard freestyle (5:00.37). The Huskers also received a pair of wins from senior Amie Buoy, who won all four diving competitions in this weekend’s meets, as she won the one- and three-meter once again with scores of 262.02 and 337.50.

Senior Rachel Schlatter and junior co-captain Kate Wheeler each won their third races in the past two meets, as Schlatter finished first in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:06.84, and Wheeler won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:28.30.

The freshman class continued to impress early in the season, as Christina Yemm and Jenny Toler each tallied victories. Yemm captured the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.96), while Toler took the 100-yard freestyle (53.72), just head of Nebraska's other freshman, Jenna Stroud (54.04).

"Some surprises came from our freshmen this weekend," Morales said. "They swam some lifetime bests yesterday and they swam even better today. They all had great swims and it was very impressive."

Yemm and Stroud were also on the winning 200-yard medley relay team (1:50.38) along with Schlatter and sophomore Lynn Siemert.

Senior Esmie Holderman won the longest race of the day, the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:42.47). Junior Bailey Ingles (200-yard butterfly, 2:10.21) and senior Alex King (50-yard freestyle, 24.91) wrapped up the second-straight 13 win day for Nebraska.

The Huskers will take next weekend off from competition before hosting a double-dual against Missouri State and South Dakota State on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 3 p.m. at the Devaney Center Pool.
