Huskers Sweep Past Red Raiders, 3-0

<?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Lubbock, Texas ? Behind a season-high nine blocks from Tracy Stalls, No. 1 Nebraska became the first team to sweep Texas Tech in Lubbock this season, posting a 30-22, 30-11, 30-16 victory at the United Spirit Arena Saturday evening. <?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

Stalls, whose previous season high was eight at Oklahoma on Sept. 28, had three in game one and six more in the finale, as Nebraska totaled 14 blocks and held the Red Raiders to -.019 hitting in the match. It marked the second time the Huskers (21-0, 12-0 Big 12) have held an opponent to negative team hitting this season.

“Anytime you can hold a team to negative numbers on the road, you are doing a good job,” Nebraska Head Coach John Cook said. “Our goal going in was to be the first Big 12 team to sweep Texas Tech on the road, and we did a great job of matching their intensity. I thought our blocking was exceptional tonight, and they executed our defensive game plan.”

In addition to Stalls, outside hitters Christina Houghtelling and Jennifer Saleaumua combined for 12 blocks. Houghtelling also had eight kills on .375 hitting and a match-high nine digs, as the Huskers posted their 35th straight Big 12 win. Saleaumua added seven kills on .538 hitting and nine digs in the win.

Sarah Pavan paced NU’s balanced offensive output with 13 kills on .381 hitting, as the Huskers hit .387 and topped the .400 mark in their final two games. Five Huskers had at least seven kills, despite playing 11 players in their 16th sweep of the season.

“When we were passing well, I thought our setters did a good job in distributing the ball and getting everyone involved,” Cook said.

The Huskers led wire to wire in the opener, posting a 30-22 victory. Nebraska overcame a rash of hitting errors midway through the game to still hit .330, as Pavan had seven kills and Houghtelling added four kills and four digs for NU.  Leading 6-5, the Huskers ran off five unanswered points, taking an 11-5 lead after a Pavan kill. NU led 13-7, but a Brianna Florus kill and two NU errors made it 13-10 and forced a Husker timeout. The Red Raiders eventually pulled to within 20-18, but a Tech service error and consecutive kills by Larson put NU up by five. Tech made one last run, closing to 25-21, but Saleaumua’s kill started a run of four straight points.

There was little drama in game two, as the Huskers hit .483 and rolled to a 30-11 victory. Nebraska, which held Texas Tech to -.125 hitting, ran off eight straight points, including seven off the serve of freshman Jordan Larson, to erase an early deficit and take a 9-3 lead after her second ace of the run. The Red Raiders pulled within 14-7, but Melissa Elmer led the Huskers on a 7-0 run with three kills and Maggie Griffin served six straight points in helping NU to a 21-7 lead after two straight kills by the senior middle blocker.

Nebraska’s block took over in the finale, as the Huskers recorded eight of their 14 stuffs in game three. NU hit .417 and had only one error to finish with just five errors in the final two games. Leading 6-5. Nebraska went on a 9-1 spurt, scoring five straight points, including three blocks by Stalls to take a 10-5 lead and force a Red Raider timeout.  The Huskers eventually pushed the lead to a 14-6 and continued to extend the lead throughout the third game to wrap up their 23rd straight road win.

Brianna Florus led Texas Tech (11-12, 4-8 Big 12) with seven kills, as NU held Philister Sang, who ranks among the Big 12 leaders in kills, to just five kills.

The Huskers return home on Wednesday, Nov. 2 to play host to Oklahoma. First serve from a sold-out NU Coliseum is set for 7 p.m. and the match will be carried on the Pinnacle Sports Network. In addition, Wednesday’s contest will be carried live state-wide on Nebraska Educational Television and shown on a tape-delayed basis on CSTV (Thursday at 7 p.m.)
