The Huskers posted a team score of 283 through the first round, putting them at five-under par and just four shots out of the top three.
The teams had started second-round play but could not complete the second 18-hole segment because of darkness. The teams will resume the round at 8 a.m. Tuesday with the third and final round to take place immediately after.
Junior transfer Ty Capps stepped back into the lineup and sizzled with a team-best 69 (36-33), improving his season-low round by six strokes, shot at the Xavier Invitational. Capps led the tournament with two eagles and scored a two-under par on par-4 holes, while his first-round score snagged him a tie for ninth place and leaves him just one stroke shy of a spot in the top five.
Senior Judd Cornell shot a 70 (33-37) while junior Ryan Lenahan finished with 71 (35-36), placing them in a tie for 19th and 25th, respectively. Lenahan also had one eagle during the first round.
Junior Brady Schnell shot a 73 (40-33) to round out the Huskers’ scoring in the first round, placing him in a tie for 42nd. The team’s first-round score of 283 is its second-lowest round of the fall season. The lowest round was a 278 in the second round at the Xavier Invitational.
Drew Reynolds rounded out the Huskers’ lineup with a 75 (37-38), placing him in a tie for 61st.
As a team, Nebraska led the tournament with three eagles and placed second with 24 birdies. The Huskers were also eight-under par with a 4.60 collective scoring average on par-5 holes.
Southern Florida posted four individuals in the top 20 to lead the tournament with a team total of 276. Host Southern Mississippi and Jacksonville State are tied for second with a 279. Mercer is in fourth place with a 280.
Mercer’s Andrew An owns the top spot in the tournament with a 63 (32-31).
The Huskers follow Monday’s action with the second and third rounds of the Sam Hall Invitational at 7:00 a.m. EST.
