Huskers Finish in 11th place at Memphis Intercollegiate

<?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>MEMPHIS-The Nebraska men’s golf team wrapped up its third tournament of the fall with an 11th-place finish Tuesday at the Memphis Intercollegiate Golf Classic at the par-72, 7,249-yard course at the Colonial Country Club in Memphis, Tenn.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

 

The 11th-place finish in the 15-team field marks a one-spot improvement on where the team stood through 36 holes yesterday. The Huskers’ final score of 897 (300-301-296) was good enough to beat out the University of South Alabama (902), Marshall (906), Iowa State (919) and Arkansas-Little Rock (923).

 

Memphis won the tournament with a final team score of 876 (291-288-297).

 

Juniors Drew Reynolds and Ryan Lenahan led the Huskers in spots one and two, respectively, while improving upon their scores at the Inverness Intercollegiate Invitational.

 

Reynolds posted a team-leading 222 (77-71-74) for a 10-stroke improvement on his performance at the Inverness Intercollegiate and 2.17 strokes below his season average thus far at 76.17. Reynolds’ score was good enough for a 22nd-place tie.

 

Lenahan was close behind with a 223 (73-75-75), consistent with his stroke average of 74.33 so far this year. Lenahan’s score placed him in a tie for 30th.

 

Reynolds and Lenahan’s finish at the top of the Husker lineup for the first time this year represents the depth the Huskers are playing with this season, and the high level of competition on the team to earn a spot in the lineup each week.

 

Third on the team was senior Judd Cornell, who finished with a 225 (73-78-74) to tie for 38th. Junior Brady Schnell grabbed the fourth spot on the team with a 227 (77-77-73), placing him at a tie for 45th. Sophomore Mark Pillen posted a 237 (80-78-79), giving him a tie for 76th and closing out the Husker lineup.

 

As a team, Nebraska placed third in par-five scoring for the tournament with an average of 4.85, or nine-under par.

 

The top individual for the tournament was Memphis’ Keven Fortin-Simard, who finished with a 208 (69-67-72). Southern Miss’ Justin Elliot shot a 212 (67-71-74), while Marshall’s Shawn Warren (73-70-71) and Tulane’s Kyle Ritchie (72-72-70) each snagged a 214, wrapping up all individuals who shot under par. Robert Rohanna (72-74-70) of PennState and Tim Schaetzel (68-77-71) of Michigan each snagged an even-par 216 to wrap up the top five individuals.

 

Southern Mississippi grabbed the second spot in the tournament with an 881 (287-301-293), while Wisconsin finished with 883 (302-295-286) for third. Iowa (298-300-286), PennState (294-302-288) and KansasState (294-294296) all tied for fourth with 884 strokes to round out the top six teams in the tournament.

 

The Huskers are next in action at the Xavier Invitational in Cincinnati, Ohio on Oct. 10-11.
