Huskers Host Alumni Meet

The Nebraska swimming and diving team will share the Devaney Center Pool with former swimmers on Saturday at 10 a.m. in the fourth annual Alumni Meet.

This is the Huskers’ second home competition of their young season, as they hosted the annual Red/White Intrasquad Meet last Friday when the Scarlet defeated the Cream, 64-50, behind sophomore Lauren Bailey’s three individual victories.

Head Coach Pablo Morales and Assistant Coach Doug Humphrey organized the first Alumni Meet in 2002, and the meet has grown each year. Only four alumni returned in its first year, but numbers have exceeded double digits the last two years.

"It is a unique meet because of its history," Morales said. "We have been doing our best to bring our alumni back. The program has a wonderful history so we want to connect that with the present and give the girls a sense of what has happened here before."

Nebraska opens the regular season next Friday, Oct. 14 at the Big 12 Relays in Columbia, Mo., and then travels to Fayetteville, Ark., to take on the Razorbacks at Noon on Saturday, Oct. 15. Note that the start time for the meet versus Arkansas has been changed back to Noon, its original time.

Recap: Cream Defeats Scarlet in Intrasquad Meet

The 2005-06 Nebraska swimming and diving team got its first taste of competition Friday, Sept. 30 at the Devaney Center Pool, as the Cream defeated the Scarlet, 64-50, in the annual Red/White Intrasquad meet.

"The meet went as well as it could have for an intrasquad meet," Morales said. "It was good to get the girls excited about racing again. It was mostly what we expected, but there were some surprise performances."

The Cream jumped on top early by winning the first three events and never looked back en route to the 14-point victory. Junior Lauren Bailey led the victors by taking first in every event she competed (200-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley and 500-yard freestyle).

Sophomore Lynn Siemert and freshman Jenna Stroud finished first and second in the 50-yard freestyle, and junior Bailey Ingles and senior Becky Johnson added victories in the 100-fly and three-meter dive, respectively.

The Cream also swept the relay events (200-yard medley relay and 400-yard free relay) and the added competitions at the end of the meet, when one diver from each squad competed in the 50-yard freestyle and one swimmer from each team went head-to-head on the one-meter dive. Junior Danielle Stansbury defeated junior Abby Fitzpatrick in the 50-yard freestyle and Ingles defeated senior Rachel Schlatter on the one-meter dive. The Scarlet stayed within striking distance throughout the meet, thanks in large part to senior diver Amie Buoy, who took first-place finishes on both the platform and one-meter dives. The Scarlet also won the 100-yard freestyle (junior Kate Wheeler), 100-yard backstroke (junior Casey Schnack) and 100-yard breaststroke (Schlatter).

Time Change: Arkansas Dual Meet Set for Noon

The time for next Saturday’s dual meet at Arkansas has been changed back to its original time of Noon. The meet was temporarily scheduled for 4 p.m., due to an Arkansas football game.

The Huskers compete at the Big 12 Relays on Friday in Columbia, Mo., at 9 a.m.
