Huskers Finish in Third Place at Sam Hall Invitational

The Nebraska men’s golf team earned its lowest score of the season, finishing with an 850 (283-283-284) at the Sam Hall Invitational at the par-72, 6,900-yard course at the Patrick Farms Golf Club in Jackson, Miss. Tuesday.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

The Huskers 14-under par finish in a 16-team field marks their best finish since winning the Fairway Club Invitational on Sept. 12, while their final score was just two strokes out of first place.

 

The Huskers were in fifth place through 18 holes Monday, while the second-round play was postponed because of darkness. The Huskers finished strong, snagging the lowest score of the tournament in the third and final round, a four-under par 284.

 

Junior Drew Reynolds and senior Judd Cornell led the team with a final score of 213, placing them in a tie for 13th. Their score was just two strokes shy of a spot in the top ten and three strokes shy of a spot in the top five.

 

Reynolds’ 213 (75-69-69) is his best tournament performance of the fall, bettering his previous lowest score of at the Xavier Invitational by three strokes. Reynolds’ last two rounds of 69 also matched his low round of the fall season, also shot at the Xavier Invitational. Reynolds also had 14 birdies and scored a three-under par on par-4 holes.

 

Cornell’s score of 213 (70-72-71) matched his best tournament performance of the fall, which he shot at the Fairway Club Invitational.

 

Junior Ryan Lenahan finished with a season-low 216 (71-71-74), snagging him a tie for 23rd and bettering his previous low by two strokes, shot at the Fairway Club Invitational. Lenahan also had a tournament-leading two eagles and scored a seven-under par on par-5 holes.

 

Juniors Brady Schnell (73-75-70) and Ty Capps (69-71-78) anchored the Husker lineup with a 218, placing them in a tie for 31st place.

 

Capps’ final score betters his season-low tournament performance by 12 strokes, shot at the Xavier Invitational. His first-round score of 69 also betters his low round of the fall season by six strokes, also shot at the Xavier Invitational. Capps also had a tournament-leading two eagles.

 

As a team, Nebraska led the tournament in eagles with five and placed third with 59 birdies. The Huskers were also 22-under par with a collective 4.63 scoring average on par-5 holes and just six-over par with a collective scoring average of 4.04 on par-4 holes.

 

Southern Florida (276-282-290) and Southern Mississippi (279-284-285) tied with a final score of 848, while Southern Florida, snagged the win in playoff holes. Jacksonville St. finished with 853 (279-284-290) while Lousiana Monroe finished with 855 (284-277-294) to round out the top five teams.

 

Southern Florida’s Kevin Tilbury owned the top spot in the tournament with a 205 (68-67-70).

 

The Sam Hall Invitational marks the final fall tournament for the Huskers, which do not see action until the UTSA Intercollegiate marks the beginning of their spring schedule on Feb.20 ? 21 in San Antonio, Texas.
