Lincoln - The <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Nebraska wrestling team began its 2005-06 season with wrestle-offs Friday night at the DevaneyCenter. Nebraska head coach Mark Manning saw signs of a team beginning to develop into a formidable squad.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>
“Tonight was a good indication of our conditioning and how our guys prepare mentally for matches,” Manning said. “We have the potential to be pretty good, but we have to develop it and keep getting better.”
One of the highlights of the night was a hard-fought 7-4 victory by true freshman Mike Rowe over Patrick Aleksanyan at 133 pounds.
“You won’t see a better match than that,” Manning said. “Both guys did a great job.”
Another highlight was Dominick Moyer. The junior 141-pound wrestler from Oskaloosa, Iowa, was the only Husker to go 3-0 during the evening. Moyer pinned Brad Zurek in the second period of the first match of the night before pinning Brady LaMar 1:58 into their match. Moyer closed the night with a 3-2 overtime win over Gregg Romano.
Moyer was one of three wrestlers to go at least 2-0 during the night. Redshirt freshmen Paul Donahoe and Chris Oliver starred at 125 pounds and 157 pounds, respectively, while true freshman Vince Jones earned a pair of victories at 184 pounds.
Senior All-Americans Jacob Klein and B.J. Padden won their only matches of the night.
The Huskers begin dual competition on Nov. 18 with a 7 p.m. dual against BoiseState at the NU Coliseum.
