Ames, Iowa ? Sophomores Sarah Pavan and Tracy Stalls combined for 23 kills, as No. 1 Nebraska remained undefeated with a 30-24, 30-23, 30-13 victory over Iowa State Saturday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum.
The duo combined to hit .436 on 39 swings, as Pavan totaled a match-high 14 kills and Stalls set a season-best with nine kills on .500 hitting. Stalls also led NU with four blocks, while Pavan had two of the Huskers’ seven aces.
The Huskers improved to 23-0 overall and 14-0 in the Big 12, extending its conference winning streak to 37 matches. The win was also John Cook’s 200th career conference win over his 13-year coaching career, including stints at Wisconsin and Nebraska.
“I thought we got off to a slow start, but really finished well,” Cook said. “We ran through our middles really well and served tough. Our serve kept them on their heels the entire match.”
The Huskers’ seven aces were the second-highest total of the season, as NU combined for six aces in the final two games. Nebraska finished the match hitting .365, including .400 in the finale, in posting its 68th win in as many matches all-time against ISU.
Stalls, who led NU in blocks in each of the last four matches, topped her previous season high of eight kills, set at Oklahoma in late September. The middle blocker had all nine of her kills in the first game and a half, including five in game one.
Christina Houghtelling joined Pavan in double figures with kills 10 kills on .471 hitting, while Jennifer Saleaumua added eight kills, two aces and a match-high 11 digs. Setters Dani Busboom and Maggie Griffin had 23 assists each, as NU hit .340 or better in all three games.
In the opener, the Huskers overcame a sluggish start in posting a 30-24 victory. NU hit .341, as sophomores Pavan and Stalls combined for 11 of NU’s 22 kills. After falling behind 11-8, the Husker defense forced seven straight sideouts, as Nebraska mounted a comeback. Pavan keyed a 5-1 Husker run with two kills and an ace, as NU took an 18-14 lead on a Houghtelling kill. The Huskers continued to push the lead, taking a 23-17 lead after Houghtelling’s kill and led 26-19 before ISU mounted a comeback. The Cyclones used a 5-1 spurt to pull with 27-24 on a Husker net violation, but Stalls pounded consecutive kills to make it 29-24 before a Cyclone two-hit call ended game one.
The Cyclones hung tough for game two until the Huskers wore the hosts down for a 30-23 victory. Houghtelling was the big offensive weapon for NU, drilling five kills as NU hit .355 as a team and had four service aces. Leading 15-14, Nebraska strung together three straight points, as Saleuamua’s second kill of the spurt gave the visitors an 18-14 advantage. ISU pulled within 20-18, but could not get closer, as Houghtelling’s kill started a 5-2 run to help the Huskers take a 25-20 lead. The Cyclones would make one final spurt, pulling to within 26-22 before Pavan recorded a kill and a service ace on consecutive plays to make it 28-22.
The Huskers took control early in the finale, using runs of 6-1 and 10-0 and holding Iowa State to -.043 hitting in the finale. ISU was within 8-5 before kills by Saleaumua and Houghtelling began a 6-1 Husker spurt that made it 14-8 after a Jordan Larson kill. The Cyclones trimmed the lead to 16-10, but Larson took over, serving nine straight points, as the Huskers took a 26-10 lead and cruised to victory.
Jessica Klein led Iowa State (13-13, 6-9 Big 12) with eight kills and hit .667 in 12 swings.
The Huskers continue the two-match road trip on Wednesday, Nov. 9, as they take on the Texas A&M Aggies. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m., and the match will be carried on B107.3 FM in Lincoln and on the Internet at Huskers.com.
