Husker Men Defeat Women in Intrasquad Meet

The <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Nebraska track and field team held its annual intrasquad meet Thursday and Friday, Dec. 8-9 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center Indoor Track. This year’s competition featured an added twist, as the Husker men’s and women’s squads faced off in a “Battle of the Sexes.”<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

The top two individual performances for each team were compared in each event by using the IAAF scoring tables, which rate individual performances similar to a multi-event competition, such as the heptathlon. While the NU men edged the women’s squad by a 66-58 score, several impressive performances were posted by athletes from each team.

Leading the way were two of Nebraska’s four returning NCAA champions, Ashley Selig and Becky Breisch. Both athletes recorded throws that surpassed personal bests, with Selig, last year’s national champion in the indoor pentathlon, throwing 39-6 1/2, and Breisch, a two-time NCAA champ, registering 57-10 1/4. Breisch is returning from a redshirt season in 2005 after suffering from an injured elbow.

Jenny Green, who also is coming off a redshirt season while recovering from a back injury, won the women’s pole vault Friday by clearing 12-5 1/2. Nebraska’s two returning NCAA All-Americans in the men’s pole vault, Gable Baldwin and Ray Scotten, tied for first in the men’s competition with heights of 16-6 3/4.

Dusty Jonas was the lone Husker to win two events during the meet, as he took first-place honors in the high jump (7-0 ?) and triple jump (47-4 1/4).

Other notable performances by the NU men included those by Courtney Jones, who ran a hand time of 7.7 in the 60-meter hurdles, and Nate Probasco, who notched a hand time of 6.7 in the 60-meter dash.

Other impressive marks by Husker women’s athletes included those by Egle Uljas, who posted a time of 1:19.34 in the 600-yard run, a mark that would have ranked sixth on NU’s all-time women’s performance list; Priscilla Lopes, who ran a hand time of 8.1 in the 60-meter hurdles; and Elizabeth Lange, who notched a time of 2:12.60 in the 800 meters.
