<?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>San Antonio, Texas - The Nebraska men’s golf team stands in fourth place through 36 holes of play after snagging a third-place spot through 18 holes to finish the first day of competition at the UTSA Intercollegiate at the par-71, 6,691-yard Oak Hills Country Club in San Antonio, Texas.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>
The Huskers posted a team score of 292 through the first 18 holes and followed up with a second-round score of 293. The team’s final total for the day at 585 leaves them just five strokes out of a spot in the top three.
Junior Drew Reynolds leads Nebraska after shooting a 142 (73-69) through the first two rounds, good enough to place him in a tie for sixth. Reynolds sizzled on the back 18, snagging a second-round score of 69 to match his season best, which he shot in the fall at the Xavier Invitational on Oct. 11, 2005.
Junior Brady Schnell is next for the Huskers with a 144 (75-69) through the first two rounds. Schnell’s score of 69 in the second round matches Reynolds for the team’s low score and brought him down to a tie for ninth in the tournament.
Senior Judd Cornell snagged a 73 on the first 18 holes but dropped to a 75 on the back 18 to end with 148 strokes. Cornell stands at third on the team and tied for 25th in the tournament.
Junior Ryan Lenahan stands close behind with a 151 (71-80), tying him for 44th. Lenahan’s first-round score of 71 was the first-round low for the team.
Junior Mark Pillen rounds out the Huskers with scores of 87 and 81 in the first and second rounds for a total of 168 strokes, and stands at 86th.
Baylor University posted two individuals in the top 10 to lead the tournament with a team total of 573 (290-283). Baylor’s Ryan Baca leads the tournament with an 11-under par 131 (64-67).
Illinois State’s Matt Miller shot a 138 (68-70) for second place while LamarUniversity’s Dusty Smith is in third with a 139 (69-70).
Lamar University’s team total of 576 (291-285) leaves them in second place, while Louisiana Monroe’s 580 (296-284) places them in third. IllinoisState’s final score of 588 (297-291) places them behind Nebraska to round out the top five.
The Huskers follow Monday’s action with the final 18 holes of the UTSA Intercollegiate Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. (central).
