Huskers Place 16 on Academic All-Big 12 Team

Lincoln - The <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Nebraska swimming and diving team placed 16 members on the 2006 Academic All-Big 12 team, the most of any Big 12 school, as the league office announced its academic honor teams Wednesday.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

 

Of Nebraska’s 16 recipients, 14 were named to the first-team, designating those have maintained a 3.20 GPA or higher. Second team members are those have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA, while the student-athlete must also compete in at least 60 percent of the team’s contests. Freshman and first-year transfers are not eligible.

 

“This news is as important to us as good news that comes from the pool or diving well,” Head Coach Pablo Morales said. “This is what we’re all about. It confirms the hard work our student-athletes put in the classroom and the great support that they get. It is a very significant achievement and we are very proud of them.”

 

Four of Nebraska’s seven seniors that were named to the squad earned first-team honors for the third straight year (Amie Buoy, Alex King, Becky Johnson and Rachel Schlatter), while Kate Dulgar was named to the second-team last year and first-team for the second time.

 

The junior class also had seven members, all of which were back-to-back honorees, while redshirt freshman Courtney Jolly and sophomore Kaci Ressler earned the honor for the first time in their careers.

 

The Huskers achieved a 7-2 dual record this season and are competing in the 2006 Big 12 Championships this week in Columbia, Mo., Feb. 22-25.
