Huskers Tied for First Place at Dick Witcoff/South Florida Invitational

<?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Tampa, Fla.- Junior Brady Schnell made his first ever hole-in-one to lead the Huskers to a first-place tie after the first of three rounds of play at the Dick Witcoff/South Florida Invitational at the par-71, 6,830-yard course at the University of South Florida Golf Course in Tampa, Fla.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

 

The Huskers posted a team score of 288 through the first 18 holes, leaving them tied for first place with Middle Tennessee St.

 

Schnell, whose ace was also the first in head coach Bill Spanglers six-year tenure at Nebraska, shot the hole-in-one on the 160-yard fifth-hole with an 8-iron, and finished with final score of 67 (32-35), good enough for the individual top spot. Schnell also finished with one eagle and four birdies, to offset his bogeys, and had a tournament-leading three-under par on par-3 scoring and one-under par on par-4 scoring.

 

“Brady’s performance today is a great example of the hard work he put in over the summer and through the fall to continue to improve his collegiate game,” Spangler said. “It was a great way to set the tone for the way we want to play in this tournament.”

 

Junior Drew Reynolds took the second spot for the Huskers as well as a tie for second in the tournament with a final score of 69 (35-34), including finishing two-under par on par-4 scoring as well as snagging a tournament-leading 16 pars.

 

Junior Ryan Lenahan stands tied for 28th with a final score of 75 (35-40), while junior Ty Capps rounds out the Huskers’ scoring lineup with a 77 (43-34), leaving him in a tie for 48th.

 

Senior Judd Cornell finished one-under par on par-3 scoring but struggled with the back nine holes to finish with a 79 (39-40) and a tie for 67th.

 

The University of New Orleans stands in third place with a 291, while Florida Southern College and OralRobertsUniversity finished with a 295 and 296, respectively, to round out the top five.

 

The Huskers follow Friday’s action with a second round of 18 holes on Saturday, beginning at 8:30 a.m., followed by the final round on Sunday at the Dick Wittcoff/South Florida Invitational at the University of South Florida Golf Course.
