Texas A&M Wins Big 12 Title

Lincoln, Neb. - Texas A&M fired a final-round 304 to come from behind in windy conditions to claim the Big 12 Conference Women's Golf Championship with an 899 team total at the Country Club of Lincoln on Wednesday. The Aggies' Ashley Knoll added an individual crown to A&M's hardware haul after firing a 215 over 54 holes.

The Aggies came in to the day one stroke behind Oklahoma State, but Texas A&M finished 11 strokes ahead of the Cowgirls, who shot 318, to finish the tournament at 910.

Aggie Head Coach Jeanne Sutherland said she was excited about the performance of her team.

"We decided that we need to focus on every shot and block everything else out.  Just take it one shot at a time," Sutherland said. "I am really happy with the win.  I knew coming into today the conditions would be an advantage for us because we have a strong short game, so it was really good for our chances."

Knoll, a junior, shot rounds of 69 and 71, clinching the title with a final-round 75 to finish with a one-under par 215.  Knoll said the team title was her primary focus coming into the tournament.

"We went out there just trying to play the best we could," Knoll said. "Winning is just such a special thing, especially because we've made it our goal all year and it is what we came here for.  The wind was a little bit of a factor, but we were used to it from our course at home, so we adjusted well."

The Cowgirls, who came into the final round at 592 (301-291) and led at the end of the first two rounds, slipped into second after firing a 318 to finish at 910.

Head Coach Laura Matthews said her team was disappointed, but understood the conditions were tough with the wind.

"No one is very happy with the way we played today," Matthews said. "Texas A&M played really well and beat us, so our hats go off to them for how good they played today."

Missouri's Stephanie Wavro earned a runner-up individual finish, climbing from fourth to second by matching Knoll with a 75 on Wednesday to finish with a five-over par 221.

"I am really excited right now.  This is just awesome,"Wavro said. "Ashley Knoll is one of the best players in the country and the wind made it really tough today.  I'm really happy to have finished the way I did today."

The Tigers (313-287-327) tied tournament-host Nebraska (307-297-323) for fourth place at 927, while Colorado took third at 922.

Baylor (931) finished sixth, while Texas settled for seventh. Iowa State managed an eighth-place showing at 937, while Kansas State finished ninth at 938. Oklahoma rounded out the top 10 with a three-round total of 940.  Kansas (955) and Texas Tech (966) wrapped up the 12-team field.
