Nominees for the award must hold a GPA of 3.0 or better, have completed one full academic year at the member institution prior to the season and have competed in 50 percent or more of the institution’s regular-season meets. Overall, the Lincoln native boasts the third-highest GPA in the conference with only senior Dylan Carney (3.91) and junior Peter Derman (3.86), both of Stanford, posting higher GPAs.
Other awards given out at the banquet include accolades for the best newcomer, most improved and the Jim Hartung Award, named after former Olympian and Nissen-Emery winner, who is now an assistant coach for the Huskers. Freshman T.J. Schmidt was named the 2006 Newcomer of the Year, while senior Nick Moore earned Most Improved honors and senior Derric Wood was chosen as the Hartung recipient.
Wood received the honor, considered the epitome of Nebraska men’s gymnastics, following his outstanding season that included seven event titles, two MPSF Gymnast of the Week honors and a 10th-place finish on the pommel horse at the NCAA Championships.
