Austin, Texas?Nebraska junior Priscilla Lopes captured her second straight Texas Relays title in the women’s 100-meter hurdles Saturday during the meet’s final day at Mike A. Meyers Stadium. A total of 16 Huskers were in action on Saturday.
Lopes handily won the event after clocking a season-best time of 12.98 to earn her first NCAA regional qualification of the season. The seven-time All-American defeated second-place Candice Davis (USC) by 0.12 seconds to repeat as Texas Relays champion in the event.
Senior Ray Scotten began his outdoor season on the right foot with a regional-qualifying clearance of 18-0 ? to claim third place in Section A of the men’s pole vault. Scotten, who struggled throughout much of the indoor season, tied event winner Robbie Pratt’s (BYU) clearance, but placed third due to number of misses. Junior Gable Baldwin also hit the regional qualification after clearing 16-6 ? (12th place).
Another Husker making his outdoor season debut, sophomore Dusty Jonas, also posted an impressive performance to finish fourth in the men’s high jump. A La Vernia, Texas, native, Jonas reached a personal-best height of 7-4 ? to qualify for next month’s NCAA Midwest Regional for the second consecutive season.
Sophomore Jenny Green claimed fifth place in Section A of the women’s pole vault with a height of 12-11 ?, which also qualified her for regionals in her season opener, while senior Becky Breisch hit the regional standard for the second straight meet in the women’s shot put with a third-place finish (55-8 ?). Junior Jeni Steiner placed 12th in the event (46-8 ?).
Other Huskers competing in Austin Saturday included junior Kayla Wilkinson, who finished runner-up in the women’s javelin with a toss of 165-5, and senior Courtney Jones, who earned sixth place in the men’s 110-meter hurdles final (13.92). The Nebraska men’s 4x400- (3:09.01) and 4x200- (1:25.49) meter relay teams also competed, finishing fifth and seventh, respectively.
NU also sent a contingent of athletes to participate in the Emporia State Relays Saturday in Emporia, Kan. Husker event winners included senor Patrick Southern (tie) in the men's pole vault (15-5), junior Adam Evans in the men's hammer throw (166-9) and sophomore Amber Curtis in the women's discus (143-3).
The Huskers return to Lincoln next weekend when they host their lone home meet of the outdoor season, the Nebraska Invitational, on Saturday. Competition begins at 11 a.m.
