Sanders Earns NWCA Academic Honors

Lincoln - Nebraska redshirt freshman wrestler Robert Sanders was one of 68 wrestlers nationally named to the 2006 NWCA All-Academic team. The 149-pounder posted a 3.3 GPA majoring in nutrition, fitness and health promotion.

For a wrestler to be honored, he either needed to have a 3.2 GPA and compete in 60 percent of his team’s competitions or qualify for the NCAA Championships or earn a 3.0 GPA in the classroom and earn All-America honors at nationals.

This marks the 16th straight year that Nebraska has been represented on the NWCA All-Academic team. Sanders earned the seventh All-Academic team citation by a Husker wrestler since Mark Manning took over as Nebraska’s head coach for the 1999-2000 season.

This continues a successful year for Sanders, who qualified for the NCAA Championships as the No. 5 seed at 149 pounds. Sanders went 1-2 at nationals and finished his first year on varsity with a 13-13 record.
