INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.?The USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships continued Saturday, as five current and former Nebraska athletes were in action at the IU Michael A. Carroll Track and Soccer Stadium.
Becky Breisch, who recently concluded her distinguished Husker career with a second-place finish in the women's shot put at the NCAA Championships, earned bronze-medal honors in her repeat bid of the USA women's discus. Breisch recorded a throw of 190-2 to finish behind NIke's Arthea Thurmond (205-1) and Asics' Suzy Powell (192-6). The Husker 10-time NCAA All-American will also compete in the women's shot put on Sunday.
Sara Jane Baker concluded her weekend in the women's heptathlon with a 11th-place finish (5,281). Baker stood in 12th following day one of the heptathlon.
Former Husker Anne Shadle, who concluded her Husker career in 2005 with a pair of NCAA titles in the indoor mile and 1,500-meter run outdoors, represented Reebok in the 1,500 on Saturday. She finished 10th in a time of 4:15.93. Another former NU standout, Ann Gaffigan, earned 11th place in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase 10:19.71. Gaffigan won the U.S. title to end her Husker career in 2004.
Junior Gable Baldwin was the lone current NU athlete among the field Saturday, as he no-heighted during a star-studded men's pole vault final.
The USA Championships continue Sunday. Featured Huskers scheduled to compete include Breisch in the women's shot put and sophomore Dusty Jonas in the men's high jump.
