Lincoln ? Nebraska men’s golf head coach Bill Spangler recently announced the time and date for the second annual Fundraiser at the Arbor Links Golf Course in Lincoln, Neb. on Friday, Sept. 8 to raise money for The Dick Spangler Memorial Golf Scholarship.
The Dick Spangler Golf Scholarship Award is presented at the end of each golf season to a sophomore or junior golfer who has made significant contributions to the men’s golf program through his attitude, effort and team spirit.
This year’s recipient is senior and three-year letter winner Drew Reynolds. Reynolds filled the second spot in the Husker lineup in the 2005-06 season as he finished with a 73.33 stroke average through 39 rounds, bringing down his career stroke average to 74.89. Reynolds posted three top-20 finishes and finished in the top-25 in five of six tournaments, improving consistently throughout the fall.
Reynolds used the momentum from the fall season to push him to two third-place finishes within the first three tournaments of the spring as he finished with a 211 (73-69-69) at the UTSA Intercollegiate and a season-low 204 (70-68-66) at the Ron Moore Invitational. Reynolds’ last round of 66 at the Ron Moore Invitational was also a new career low.
May 2005 graduate and four-year letter winner Judd Cornell was recognized as the first recipient of the award in the fall of 2005. The recipient is selected by the men’s golf coach.
Dick Spangler earned three letters for the Nebraska golf team from 1950 to 1952, was a Nebraska Amateur champion and served on the board of the Trans-Mississippi Golf Association. Always a gentleman, his quick wit, enjoyable sense of humor and his dedication to the game of golf bring honor and credit to the University of Nebraska and the great game of life.
Dick Spangler was inducted into the Nebraska Golf Hall of Fame in 1997. He passed away on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003 in Lincoln. He is survived by his wife, Bobbie, and his sons and daughters-in-law Rich and Marga, Rus and Gail, and Bill and Alesia. Bill Spangler is in his sixth season as Nebraska’s men’s golf coach.
