Huskers Name 11 Captains for 2007 Season

Lincoln ? Head Coach Gary Pepin has announced the names of 11 athletes who will serve as captains for the Nebraska men’s and women’s track and field teams during the 2007 season. Five men and six women were selected in a recent vote by their teammates to serve as leaders throughout the upcoming campaign.

The women’s group of captains features four seniors, two of whom are former NCAA All-Americans. 2005 NCAA pentathlon champion Ashley Selig (Lincoln, Neb.), in her second consecutive stint as a team captain, enters her final campaign with only an outdoor season of competition remaining. Senior Kayla Wilkinson (Deshler, Neb.), who finished runner-up at last year’s NCAA outdoor meet, will help captain the women’s team for the first time, while seniors Justine Roach (Leicester, England) and Casie Witte (Lincoln, Neb.) also were chosen by their teammates to lead the NU women for the first time in 2007. Senior Kim Pancoast (Cape Girardeau, Mo.) and junior Betsy Miller (Lodgepole, Neb.), currently serving as co-captains for the Nebraska women’s cross country team, round out the Husker women’s captains’ council.

Included among the Nebraska men’s representatives are four former Big 12 champions, including three who have reached All-American status during their careers. Seniors Nate Probasco (Scribner, Neb.) and Issar Yazhbin (Yavne, Israel) return for their final seasons after serving as captains in 2006, while All-American seniors Gable Baldwin (Grand Island, Neb.) and Daniel Roper (Plantation, Fla.) each will serve their first stints as captains. Junior Alec Maduza (Shorewood, Wis.) will join the NU men’s council while serving as team captain during the current cross country season.

“This is a very good group and an experienced group with some outstanding competitors,” Pepin said. “We always hope to have student-athletes of high character who are team-oriented to serve as captains, and those individuals voted on certainly fit that mold.”
