Huskers Storm Past Cyclones

<?xml:namespace prefix="st1"?>Lincoln ? All-American Sarah Pavan had a match-high 15 kills and five blocks, as top-ranked Nebraska overcame a slow start to sweep Iowa State, 31-29, 30-20, 30-17, Wednesday evening at the NU Coliseum.

The Huskers, who improved to 10-0 overall and 3-0 in the Big 12, relied on a balanced offense with four players totaling at least eight kills. Sophomore Jordan Larson turned in her sixth double-double of the season with 11 kills and 11 digs, while Tracy Stalls and Dani Mancuso also chipped eight kills apiece in the victory. Stalls totaled six of her seven kills in the finale, also set season best with eight blocks and seven digs.

The Huskers, who improved to 69-0 all-time against ISU, wore down the Cyclones, who entered Wednesday’s match leading the Big 12 in both blocks and opponent hitting percentage. NU out-hit ISU, .250-.083, while totaling 13 blocks, compared to only five for the visitors. It marked the fifth time in 10 matches this season that the Huskers have held an opponent to under .100 hitting.

For Nebraska Coach John Cook, the momentum of the match turned around midway through game one after the Cyclones took a 17-11 lead, silencing a sellout crowd of 4,079.

Coming Thursday

Nebraska Head Coach John Cook talks about flying with the Blue Angels and a photo gallery of the event.

“I think we started playing with a sense of urgency, and I don’t think we had been up to that point,” Cook said.

The Huskers dug themselves a hole early on, as Iowa State’s Erin Boeve led the Cyclones on a 7-2 run to open the match. The ISU middle blocker had two kills and a block early, while the visitors took advantage of several Husker hitting miscues.

The Cyclones, who had not taken a game from NU since 1994, eventually built the margin to six points before the Huskers woke up.  Sophomore Rachel Schwartz served six straight points in 7-0 NU run, as the Huskers took their first lead of the night at 20-19 on a Rachel Holloway kill. The Husker eventually pushed the lead to 27-25 after a Pavan kill, only to see ISU fight back. The Cyclones scored three straight points to take a 28-27 lead after a Lauren Cummings kill. After Pavan’s kill tied the game, Stalls’ solo block of Jessica Klein put the Huskers up 29-28. ISU fought off one match point, but Larson’s kill and ball-handing error gave the Huskers a hard-fought victory.

The Huskers sustained the momentum from the opener in leading from wire to wire in a 30-20 victory in game two. Pavan paced NU’s attack with eight kills on .500 hitting and two blocks, while Larson and Mancuso chipped in four kills apiece. The Huskers raced out to a 4-0 lead and took command during a 6-1 run where Mancuso had a pair of kills in helping the Huskers to a 12-6 advantage. The Cyclones hit just .042 in the game and went to the locker room with a 2-0 deficit.

Cook said that Mancuso’s steady play throughout the match kept the Cyclones off balance and allowed NU to open up the attack as the evening progressed.

“I thought Dani did a nice job tonight,” Cook said. “She mad a couple of adjustments when she needed to and had a couple of kills on tough sets in out-of-system plays.”

In the finale, the Huskers got rolling offensively, hitting .441 to salt the match away with a 30-17 victory. Stalls led the charge with six kills on seven swings, while freshman Kori Cooper had two kills and a pair of blocks in the finale, sparking a decisive 7-1 run that turned a one-point lead into a 15-8 advantage.

Katie Jessen led ISU (9-3, 1-1 Big 12) with a double-double, totaling 12 kills and 12 digs, as ISU out-dug NU, 56-50.

The Huskers return to action on Saturday afternoon, as they play host to Texas Tech. First serve is at 2 p.m. and the match can be seen state-wide on Nebraska Educational Television and on the Internet at Huskers.com. Fans can also listen to Saturday’s match on B107.3 FM in Lincoln
