Lincoln ?Because of a forecast for inclement weather throughout the morning and early afternoon, today’s Swing for a Cure Fundraiser for Jed Morris has been postponed until Friday, Oct. 13.
Friday’s event will have the same schedule as the original event, with fans invited to take batting practice against the Husker coaching staff from Noon to 2:30 p.m. or after the Huskers’ final Red/White Scrimmage game between 6-7 p.m. While there is no cost to take BP, fans are encouraged to bring donations for the Jed Morris Victory Fund.
The only event from Wednesday’s original schedule not affected by the weather will be the opening game of the Huskers’ Red/White Series, which will still take place at 3 p.m.
Friday’s rescheduled event will raise funds for Jed Morris, who played two seasons at Nebraska (2001-02), helping the Huskers to a pair of College World Series appearances. A first-team All-American in his final season at NU, Morris was diagnosed with lymphocytic leukemia in August while playing professionally with the Midland (Texas) Rockhounds. He is currently undergoing a series of chemotherapy treatments at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla.
Donations will also be taken during Friday’s Red/White Series game at 3 p.m. and an additional batting practice session will take place after Friday’s game between 6-7 p.m.
According to the National Marrow Donor Program, acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) is a fast-growing cancer of the white blood cells. Lymphocytes are a type of white blood cell that the body uses to fight infections. There are about 4,000 new cases of ALL in the United States each year. It appears most often in children younger than age 10. ALL is the most common leukemia in children. However, it can appear in people of any age -- about one-third of cases are adults.
For more information on the event or on how to donate to the Jed Morris Victory Fund, contact the Nebraska baseball office at (402) 472-2269 or e-mail Renee Brinkmann at rbrinkmann@huskers.com.
