Huskers Sweep Aggies

College Station, Texas ? Sarah Pavan pounded a match-high 17 kills, while Jordan Larson recorded her seventh straight double-double, powering No. 1 Nebraska to a 30-25, 30-24, 30-20 sweep of Texas A&M Saturday night at G. Rollie White Coliseum. <?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

 

Pavan, who has averaged nearly six kills per game in her career against Texas A&M, totaled 17 kills on .394 hitting and four blocks to pace the Huskers to a .342 hitting performance, their best offensive total in nearly a month.

 

Larson joined Pavan in double figures in kills with 11 and added a match-high 15 digs, as she became the first Husker to record seven straight double-doubles since Jennifer Saleaumua in 2003. It was her team-best 11th double-double of the year.

 

Nebraska Coach John Cook said the Huskers’ experience was the key against a youthful Aggie team that started four freshmen on Saturday.

 

“I think our experience showed the court tonight,” Cook said. “Texas A&M played exceptionally well, but we hung in there and weathered the storm and made some big plays at the end of games. A lot of that has to do with experience and confidence as a team.

 

The Huskers (15-0, 7-0 Big 12) also received strong performances from both middle blockers, as Tracy Stalls and Kori Cooper combined for 15 kills on just 25 swings. Cooper, returning to her home state, matched her career high with eight kills on .615 hitting and three blocks, while Stalls added seven kills on .583 hitting.

 

“We have been trying to be more balanced the last couple of weeks," Cook said. "Rachel and the middles were connecting well. They were making it look easy, which was fun to watch."

 

In game one, Pavan led the way as the Huskers posted a 30-25 victory. The junior right-side hitter had 10 kills on .529 hitting, an ace and combined with Cooper on a block at game point. NU out-hit the Aggies, .283-.212 and totaled 29 digs, including 12 by Larson.  The teams battled through much of an opener that featured 13 ties and five lead changes, before NU took control late to subdue the Aggies.  

 

With the score tied at 20, the Huskers took advantage of a pair of Aggie miscues before Dani Mancuso and Stalls combined on a block to push the lead to three points and force an Aggie timeout. Pavan extended the Husker advantage to 24-20 on an ace, but Texas A&M scored two quick points to pull within 24-22 and force a Husker timeout. Texas A&M got within a 24-23, but the Huskers scored four of the next five points to salt the game away, as kills by Pavan and Larson made it a 28-24 lead.

 

In game two, the Huskers used a strong performance from their middle blockers in pulling away late for a 30-24 victory to take a 2-0 lead into the locker room. Cooper and Stalls keyed the win, combining for nine kills on just 13 swings. Cooper totaled five kills in six swings, while Stalls had four kills on .571 hitting, as the Huskers hit .438 as a team. Once again, the teams traded points for most of the game, as the Aggies eventually took a 19-16 lead after a Courtnee Rhodes aces.

 

<?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Nebraska roared back, scoring the next three points to tie the game at 19 on a Larson solo block. The Aggies took a 20-18 lead on a Rhodes kill, but the Huskers took over, running off three straight points to earn a 22-20 advantage. Texas A&M evened the game at 23, but a Cooper kill, a Pavan solo block and a kill by Stalls gave the Huskers the lead for good at 26-23. The hosts got within 26-24, but could get no closer, as the Huskers ran off the final four points of game two.

 

In the finale, the Huskers built a lead midway through and pulled away for a 30-20 win. Larson, who had just six kills in the first two games, took over with five kills on seven swings, while NU out-hit the Aggies .344-.171.  The Huskers trailed 12-11 before running off three straight points, taking a 14-12 lead on a Larson ace. Texas A&M got within 15-14, but NU took over by scoring six of the next eight points to claim a 21-16 lead on a Holloway kill.

 

Sarah Ammerman led Texas A&M with 14 kills, as the Aggies dipped to 8-7 overall and 1-6 in the Big 12

 

The Huskers return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 11, as they travel to No. 17 Missouri for a key Big 12 showdown. First serve from the HearnesCenter is set for 6:30 p.m. and the match will be carried on the Husker Sports Network and on Huskers.com. In addition, the match will be carried on FSN Midwest (Ch. 37 on Time Warner Cable in Lincoln and Ch. 47 on Cox Cable in Omaha).
