Parsons, a seven-time All-American at Nebraska, received regional gymnast-of-the-year accolades for the second consecutive season. The St. Charles, Mo., native joins former Husker Richelle Simpson as the only Nebraska gymnast to earn the award twice, as Simpson accomplished the same feat after memorable campaigns in 2003 and 2005. Nebraska has had four athletes win six regional awards in program history, as Courtney Brown and Heather Brink were presented with the honors in 1999 and 2000, respectively.
Parsons has achieved great success in her three seasons at Nebraska, capturing seven Big 12 event crowns and being named 2007 Big 12 Co-Gymnast of the Year. At the 2007 Big 12 Championships, Parsons took first in the all-around, vault, beam and floor, followed by event wins at the 2007 NCAA West Regional on vault and floor. Parsons has earned a total of 35 individual event titles this season, bringing her career total to 85 event crowns to make her Nebraska’s all-time leader in event wins.
The award is annually voted on by head coaches in the South Central Region, which includes Nebraska, Oklahoma, Arizona State, Missouri, Arizona, Arkansas, Illinois-Champaign, Illinois-Chicago, Northern Illinois, Southeast Missouri State, Texas Woman's University and IllinoisState.
Parsons will lead No. 6 Nebraska into its ninth straight NCAA Championships, April 26-28, in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Huskers, who are 23-5 on the season, will compete in the first preliminary session on Thursday, April 26 at 1 p.m. (MST), vying against Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Oklahoma and Oregon State for one of three spots to advance to the NCAA Super Six Finals the following night at 7 p.m.
