The six-year Husker head coach will lead a camp of 32 athletes (16 boys and 16 girls from the ages of 13-18) from all over the nation who are part of an ethnically under-represented population that is less than 20 percent of the current USA Swimming membership. In addition, they must have met the USA Swimming qualification time standard in at least one event.
Joining Morales on the camp staff will be Tommy Jackson (Atlanta, Ga.), Abi Liu (Palo Alto, Calif.), Ben Sheppard (Oakland, Calif.) and Tanica Jamison (Austin, Texas). Aside from in-pool training, Morales’ staff will also lead motivational and educational sessions and team-building activities. The staff was selected from accomplished multicultural candidates across the United States.
Morales was an 11-time NCAA champion at Stanford University and was selected as the 1992 U.S. Olympic Committee’s Sportsman of the Year following three golds and two silvers in the 1984 (Los Angeles) and 1992 (Barcelona) Summer Games. In addition, he recently served on the bid committee which helped Omaha gain the 2008 U.S. Olympic swimming trials (June 29-July 6, 2008).
The purpose of the 2007 Diversity Select Camp is to “Instill a vision of success and inspire athletes from ethnically under-represented populations to become leaders in the sport of swimming.”
