Ames, Iowa - The Nebraska softball team jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead and held off a late Iowa State rally to pick up its seventh straight victory with a 3-1 win over the Cyclones on Thursday at the Southwest Athletics Complex.
The Huskers scored all three of their runs in the top of the second. Senior Devin Porter sent the first pitch of the inning over the wall in left for a leadoff, solo shot to put NU on the scoreboard. Senior Jamie Waldecker then drew a walk and moved up to second on a ground out. A single off the bat of sophomore Brittany Pascale put runners at the corners.
Pascale then recorded the first stolen base of her career and Waldecker scored following an errant throw from ISU catcher Ashley Killeen. Sophomore Darcy Rutherford then brought Pascale home with a two-out single to left field.
Iowa State broke up Hill's bid for a no-hitter and got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Fallon Johnson blooped a single to shallow left field. She then took off for second on a 1-1 pitch to Alex Johnson and the hit-and-run worked perfectly as she laced a double to right center to score Johnson and narrow the Huskers' lead to 3-1.
NU tried to answer back when it loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the seventh, before freshman Whitney Barrett made solid contact while flying out to right field.
A leadoff walk, an infield single and a ground out put Cyclones at second and third with only one out in the bottom of the seventh and marked the end of the day for starting pitcher Molly Hill. Senior Ashley DeBuhr came on in a tough spot and quickly recorded a three-pitch strikeout before issuing a walk to load the bases. DeBuhr came right back to get Fallon Johnson to foul out and end the game.
Hill (15-7) earned the victory for NU, allowing one run on three hits in 6.1 innings. DeBuhr picked up her third save of the game - and second in two games - by tossing a scoreless two-thirds of an inning. With the save, DeBuhr tied her head coach Rhonda Revelle for seventh on the Nebraska all-time saves chart with seven.
With the victory, Nebraska improved to 34-13 on the season and 7-4 in the Big 12 Conference.
Alyssa Ranson (10-14) took the loss for Iowa State, which fell to 22-33 on the season and 1-9 in league play. In her second complete-game effort of the week against the Huskers, Ransom allowed three runs on six hits.
Nebraska continues a three-game road trip this weekend when the Huskers head to Norman, Okla., for a two-game series with the fourth-ranked Oklahoma Sooners.
