<?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Lincoln? The Husker coaching staff and members of the Nebraska swimming and diving team recently completed its most successful summer camps ever following three weeks of swimming instruction to youths from across the Midwest.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>
Over 100 boys and girls participated in three camps during the month of June at the Devaney Natatorium, marking the largest number of campers ever under head coach Pablo Morales and assistant coach Doug Humphrey. The coaching staff stressed all emphases of swimming in a new combined stroke and training camp format, a change from recent years when the two camps were separated.
“It was a really good year,” Morales said. “We had our highest enrollment numbers ever and I think all the campers had a really good experience. We combined our two training and stroke camps into one and I think the kids got a lot out of it. There was a lot of positive energy going on at all the camps.”
Current and former Husker swimmers Bailey Ingles, Kate Wheeler, Sarah Ziegelmann and Jenna Stroud assisted Morales and Humphrey at the camps, which included games and competitions out of the pool as well. Campers had the option of commuting to camp or staying in an on-campus dormitory. All received a free campT-Shirt, snorkel and camp photo.
“I think the new format made the camp more encompassing for the athlete,” Humphrey said. “They got a full experience, not only with the improvement of their strokes but also with an introduction to a typical training schedule. Across the board it was very educational for them in all aspects of swimming.”
Information and dates for the 2008 Husker Swim Camps will be released in January. Check back to Huskers.com for more information.
