Lincoln ? Nebraska volleyball fans in Omaha will be able to hear the defending national champion Huskers loud and clear beginning this weekend, as the Husker Sports Network announced the addition of KHUS (93.3 FM) to the volleyball radio network on Tuesday.
"We are delighted to bring Husker volleyball radio broadcasts to Omaha," said Husker Sports Network General Manager David Witty. "We are always looking for ways to expand the radio network and the exposure of our programming, and the addition of KHUS gives our fans in Omaha a chance to hear the defending national champions."
KHUS-FM is the new exclusive home for Husker women’s sports in the Omaha market, as the station will serve as a flagship station for the Husker volleyball and women’s basketball programs.
This fall, fans will be able to listen to every Nebraska volleyball match, except ones in direct conflict with Husker football games, as Coach John Cook’s Huskers will shoot for their second straight national title. During basketball season, the NU women’s team will be featured, as the Huskers will make a bid for their fifth straight postseason appearance. Selected non-conference match-ups and every Big 12 and postseason contest will be carried live on the station, as Coach Connie Yori’s squad comes off a 22-win season in 2006-07.
According to KHUS Program Director Tom Goodwin, the station is excited to become the newest listening destination for Husker sport fans.
"This is something that we have been working on for quite a while," Goodwin said. "We have seen the interest that these two programs have generated with volleyball coming off a national title and being ranked No. 1 this season and the basketball program reaching the NCAA Tournament last season. We are proud to be Omaha’s home for these two nationally prominent programs."
For Nebraska volleyball coach John Cook, adding an Omaha radio affiliate is another major step to broaden the audience for Husker volleyball. KHUS joins 17 other affiliates across Nebraska to give the Husker volleyball program the most extensive radio network in the country.
"Our fans in Omaha have been vocal about getting to listen to our matches, and we appreciate all of the work that our friends at the Husker Sports Network have done to find us a radio home in Omaha," Cook said. "It is important for our program to continue the relationship we are trying to establish in Omaha in addition to playing three matches at the Qwest Center this fall. This allows our fans an opportunity to follow us whether we are at home or on the road."
Fans will have their first opportunity to hear Nebraska volleyball this Friday night at 8:30 p.m., as the top-ranked Huskers will take on Tennessee in the opening round of the AVCA Showcase at the Qwest Center. Over 10,000 all-session tickets have been sold for this weekend’s tournament and good seats are available by visiting Ticketmaster.com or at Ticketmaster outlets across the state.
The Host Communications Husker Sports Network is in its 12th year of producing live broadcasts of University of Nebraska sporting events. The Husker Sports Network began its original contract with Nebraska in 1996-97 and it has been renewed through 2011.
