Nebraska earned the win on the defensive end, out-blocking Kansas, 8-3, and holding Kansas to .073 hitting ? the lowest by a Husker opponent this season. Tracy Stalls topped the Huskers with a season-high five blocks, as she became the 11th Husker to ever reach the 500-block plateau.
Game one was too much Pavan and too many miscues for Kansas, as the Huskers took the opener by a score of 30-18. Pavan totaled six kills on .455 hitting, as NU hit .333 as a team, while Kansas committed 10 hitting errors en route to hitting just .024. The Huskers took control early behind the play of Pavan, who keyed the Huskers on an early 7-2 spurt, turning a 3-3 game into a 10-5 Husker lead. Pavan had two tips and a block in a three-play sequence to trigger the Husker run. KU fought back, pulling to within 12-9, but Nebraska took matters into its own hands with five unanswered points to take an eight point lead after Larson slammed down a Jayhawk overpass. The Huskers continued to extend their lead and cruised to a 12-point victory.
The second game was more of a battle, as the Huskers used a strong game from Larson to pull away late for a 30-24 victory. Larson totaled nine kills without an error on 13 swings, helping the Huskers hit .439 as a team. The Huskers found themselves down early, as KU won the first four rallies and built a 10-7 lead before Larson led Nebraska back, as NU tied the game at 12-all. KU eventually led 17-16 before a Pavan kill and two straight swings from Larson gave the Huskers their first lead. KU pulled to within 22-21 on a Jenna Kaiser kill before a Houghtelling kill and a Jayhawk attack error gave NU a three-point lead and forced a KU timeout. The Jayhawks got within 24-23 before a Stalls kill, a Pavan ace and a block by Rachel Holloway and Stalls pushed the margin to four points, helping the Huskers take a 2-0 lead into the locker room.
In the finale, the Huskers got a strong offensive performance from Houghtelling and strong serving from Larson in a 30-18 victory. NU held KU to .000 hitting, while Larson ran off spurts of 3-0 and 4-0 from the service line, highlighted by three consecutive aces. Houghtelling got the Huskers going with two straight kills before combining with Stalls on a block to put the Huskers up 8-5. The Jayhawks were within 11-8, but Nebraska took the suspense out of the contest by winning 10 of the next 11 points, including three kills and three aces from Larson that put NU ahead 21-9.
Jenna Kaiser led Kansas (9-6. 2-3 Big 12) with eight kills, while Natalie Uhart chipped in seven kills in her first action since the second weekend of the season.
The Huskers return home to begin a two-match homestand on Saturday, Sept. 29, when they host Baylor at the NU Coliseum. First serve is set for 7 p.m. and the match will be carried on B107.3 FM and on Huskers.com
