The Nebraska swimming and diving team will swim in a competitive atmosphere for the first time since February when it kicks off the 2007-08 season this Friday, Oct. 5 with the sixth annual Scarlet vs. Cream Intrasquad meet. The start time is set for 4 p.m. at the Devaney Natatorium with free admission to the public.
The Huskers open the new campaign after a 7-6 dual season in 2006-07. Nebraska returns 14 letterwinners from that squad, while welcoming a group of 11 freshmen from 10 states. The start of the new season begins Pablo Morales’ seventh season as the Husker head coach, in which he has achieved a 32-22 career record and was named the 2004 Big 12 Coach of the Year.
Nebraska’s 2008 senior class consists of Adrienne Goodman and Lynn Siemert, both experienced veterans who look to lead the Huskers in their final seasons in Lincoln. They will be supported by three juniors (Jenna Stroud, Jenny Toler and Christina Yemm) and a sophomore class that includes two Big 12 Championship final qualifiers in Kaitlin Arntz and Mariah Hutchinson.
The diving squad will be led by returning NCAA Zone qualifier Courtney Jolly. The junior had a breakout sophomore season in 2006-07 when she won five regular season events finished seventh on the one meter at the Big 12 Championships. She is leading a diving corp that includes three freshmen.
On board with the Nebraska swimming and diving program for the 17th season is assistant coach Doug Humphrey, while diving coach Natasha Chikina enters her third year at Nebraska. The Huskers also added graduate assistant Destiny Frankenstein, a 2006 graduate of the Univeristy of Kansas, and Emilee Crawford, a former Nebraska backstroker and four-year letterwinner from 2004-2007.
The all-time intrasquad series is tied at 2-2 after the Scarlet defeated the Cream, 61-51 last season. Following the 2007 scrimmage, Nebraska will open the regular season with Big Ten opponent Illinois next Friday, Oct. 13 at 5 p.m. at the Devaney Natatorium.
