The Nebraska softball team plays the first of two fall tournaments this weekend when NU welcomes Augustana (S.D.) and Nebraska-Omaha to Bowlin Stadium for the Husker Fall Classic on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 20-21. Admission and parking are free for all games and round-robin play begins at Noon each day.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>
On Saturday, the Huskers face UNO at Noon and Augustana at 2:30 p.m. The Mavericks and Vikings close out the first day of competition by squaring off at 5 p.m. On Sunday, Nebraska and Augustana get things started at Noon before Augustana faces UNO at 2:30 p.m. The Huskers and Mavericks will conclude the tournament with a 5 p.m. matchup. Live stats for each game will be available on Huskers.com.
Fans attending the Husker Fall Classic will see many familiar faces, as Nebraska returns every starter from last year’s team that finished second at the Big 12 Championship to eventual national runner-up Texas A&M. Several new faces will also take the field for the first time, including five freshmen and first-year assistant coach Diane Miller.
Local fans will especially enjoy the Husker Fall Classic, as the event promises to have a distinctly Nebraskan flare. A total of 24 players who competed for a Nebraska high school are on a roster for this weekend, including eight for the Huskers. One special connection of note involves Nebraska senior Darcy Rutherford, who will face her twin sister Ally, a senior at Augustana. Both Rutherfords played their prep ball for Omaha Central.
Nebraska’s fall season began with its first practice on Tuesday, Sept. 9 and will conclude with a three-game intrasquad scrimmage Oct. 7-10. The Huskers’ only other fall tournament is the Hawkeye Fall Classic in Iowa City, Iowa, Oct. 4-5. Nebraska will face Western Illinois and Iowa on both days of the tournament.
