Huskers Sweep Big 12 Weekly Honors

IRVING, Texas ? Three Nebraska volleyball players were honored Monday, as Jordan Larson and Amanda Gates from Nebraska were named the Big 12 Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, while Husker setter Sydney Anderson was awarded Rookie of the Week for the matches of Oct. 20-26.

Larson averaged a Big 12-leading 4.75 points along with 4.17 kills and 2.67 digs to lead the Huskers to a pair of sweeps last week.  She recorded 13 kills on a season-best .407 hitting percentage against Texas A&M, while adding six digs and two solo blocks.  The two-time All-American then posted her sixth double-double of 2008, finishing with a match-high 12 kills, 10 digs and two assists at Oklahoma. With her double-double at Oklahoma, Larson tied three-time All-American Nancy Metcalf for the most double-doubles (44) among NU players in the Big 12 era. It marked the second weekly honor for Larson in 2008 and fifth of her career.

Gates compiled 2.00 blocks per set to rank first in the conference in the category last week and collect her first-ever Big 12 honor. She also contributed 1.83 kills per set while hitting at a .667 clip to help NU to a perfect week. She tallied a match-high eight blocks with three kills in five swings in the sweep of the Aggies, including four blocks in a decisive 11-1 spurt to end the first set. At Oklahoma, Gates totaled four blocks and added eight kills on .700 hitting to help NU become the first Big 12 team to sweep the Sooners in Norman this season.

 Anderson guided the second-ranked Huskers to a .330 hitting percentage in two sweeps on the week. The sophomore averaged 12.33 assists, while also adding 1.17 blocks and 1.33 digs per set. She put together one of her best efforts at Oklahoma on Saturday, finishing with 40 assists, four kills on .500 hitting and four blocks, including a pair of solo stuffs.

The second-ranked Huskers are 20-0 overall and 11-0 in Big 12 play heading into Wednesday’s match at Colorado. First serve from the Coors Event Center is set for 7:30 p.m. (central) and the match will be carried on the Husker Sports Network and on Huskers.com.
