Iowa City, Iowa - Kelsey Grushecky and Christina Yemm each had event wins for Nebraska in its meet against Iowa, but it wasn’t enough as the Huskers fell to the Hawkeyes 192-107 in Iowa City on Saturday morning. The Huskers fell to 0-2 with the loss, while the Hawkeyes improved to 3-1.
Grushecky took home first place in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.27, while Yemm cruised to a victory in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:09.78. Hailey Dean had a pair of second-place finishes on the day in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.36) and the 200-yard IM (2:12.82). The Huskers only won two of the 16 events on the day as Iowa managed to out-touch NU on a number of close races.
“We knew Iowa was going to be a tough challenge today,” NU Head Coach Pablo Morales said. “They’ve become a very solid Big Ten school, and they have a lot of good swimmers.”
Morales said he’s still pleased with the improvements and the overall progress of the team’s training, even if it has struggled in its first two dual meets.
“Our training has been going very well,” Morales said. “We’re just in a development phase right now in terms of generating race speed. It’s a work in progress, but we have to have faith in our training and keep working hard.”
The Huskers went into the meet without one of its top swimmers, junior Mariah Hutchinson, and one of its top divers, freshman D’Arcy Schmidt.
“We were a little shorthanded today, but I believe we have a lot of great talent on this team and we’re continuing to work on making sure that talent comes out during meets,” Morales said.
The Huskers have next weekend off before the NU divers head to Minnesota for the Minneapolis Diving Invitational on Nov. 14-16. Nebraska will then kick off its home schedule the following week with the four-day Husker Invitational on Nov. 20-23.
