Huskers Sweep Jayhawks, 3-0
Lawrence, Kan. ? Third-ranked Nebraska used its best offensive night of the year, sweeping Kansas, 25-21, 25-18, 25-12 Saturday night at Horejsi Family Athletics Center.
The Huskers (25-1, 16-1 Big 12) hit a blistering .447 as a team, hitting over the .400 mark for the first time this season in handing Kansas (12-14, 6-11 Big 12) its first conference home sweep of the season.
Nebraska, which reached the 25-win plateau for the 16th straight season, used a balanced offensive effort, putting three players in double figures in kills. Jordan Larson led the Huskers with 15 kills on a season-high .438 hitting and 11 digs for her 11th double-double of the year. Lindsey Licht and Tara Mueller added 10 kills apiece, while Licht added three stuffs in NU’s 18th sweep of the year. Sydney Anderson keyed the attack with 42 assists, four kills and nine digs, helping NU hit .400 or better in all three sets.
Nebraska also got strong efforts from middle blockers Amanda Gates and Kori Cooper, who combined for 14 kills without an error on 19 swings, including eight kills on .727 hitting from Gates.
The Huskers used a strong offensive effort in the opening set to post a 25-21 victory. Nebraska hit .421 as a team, as Larson paced the Big Red with eight kills, while Mueller had four kills, including three decisive swings to help the Huskers take control. Early on, Kansas got off to a great start, running off five straight points, including three kills from Karina Garlington to take an early 8-4 advantage. NU began to chip away, using a 6-2 spurt to pull even at 11-all after a block from Lindsey Licht and Amanda Gates. KU eventually pushed the lead to 14-12, but Nebraska would respond with two straight points, tying the score at 15 after Larson slammed an overpass. The Huskers finally took the lead at 17-16 after a Mueller kill, the start of a big run for the sophomore. After KU tied the score at 17, Mueller struck for a pair of kills to spot the Huskers a two-point lead. KU closed to within 19-18, but after an attack error, Mueller ran off three straight points at the service line, extending the Husker lead to 23-18 after a service ace. The Jayhawks fought off one set point, but Larson’s eighth kill of the set gave NU the win.
In the second set, the Nebraska used a strong closing run to take a 25-17 victory. The Huskers hit a blistering .500 as a team and ran off the final four points of the set to take a 2-0 lead into the locker room. Balance was the key for the Huskers, as all six attackers had at least three kills, including four kills on five swings from Anderson, who dished out 16 assists. The set was close throughout, as the Huskers used a 4-1 spurt to turn a 10-all tie into a three-point lead after a Mueller kills. The Jayhawks pulled to within 16-14, but swings from Anderson and Cooper quickly pushed the lead back to four and forced a timeout. Kansas would eventually pull within 21-18, but Licht’s kill ignited the decisive run, as the Huskers used a pair of Larson kills to pull away.
Nebraska continued to roll in the finale, jumping out to a quick lead and cruising to a 25-12 win. NU hit .407 In the set, while holding the Jayhawks to -.065 hitting. Licht got the Huskers going early on in the third set with three kills and a solo stuff to help NU build an early 7-2 lead and force a KU timeout. The Jayhawks cut the margin to 8-4, but two straight hitting errors and a Mueller kill made it a seven-point lead. Every time KU would trim the lead, the Huskers extended it right back, building a nine-point advantage at 17-9 to force KU’s second timeout and making it a 21-11 lead moments later after a Schwartz ace and an Anderson solo block. Schwartz added another ace as the Huskers pulled away for a 13-point win.
Garlington led Kansas with nine kills and nine digs, as the Jayhawks saw their four-match home win streak snapped.
The Huskers return to action Wednesday night, as they travel to Austin, Texas, for a matchup with the fourth-ranked Texas Longhorns. First serve at Gregory Gym is set for 8 p.m. and the match will be carried on the Husker Sports Network and on Huskers.com. In addition, the match will be televised by ESPNU.
