After finishing fifth on Friday night in the 400-meter hurdles to complete the first half of his epic journey, Thornton returned on Saturday to finish eighth in the 110 hurdles.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>
Over the four-day meet, Thornton was the only hurdler in the entire meet running in both races, running six total races, including two races on both Thursday and Friday.
In the 110 hurdles, Thornton becomes the first Husker on the men’s side to earn All-America honors since David Davis Jr. in 2003. On Friday, Thornton became the first Husker on the men’s side to finish in the top eight in the 400 hurdles at the national meet since Mark Jackson also finished fifth 17 years ago in 1992.

The Huskers sophomore started in the 100-meter hurdles... finishing 19th with a time of 14.18. She has now moved to the high jump were she is still jumping... looks like the bar is at 5-3.
And she just cleared with ease.
On another note... the sun is out, which is great... I'd really appreciate to not have another 3 hour rain delay tonight, well for the rest of the meet for that matter.

Thornton and Dailey both advanced to the 400 hurdle semis... Seth Burney is in the pole vault finals... still waiting on official word on Bullock... from how she was jumping I'd expect her to be in.
Still have events to go tonight.. so we'll see how long they let this go... guess it's time to watch some TRS (Totally Rad Show)

Kirkland Thornton is throwing down on some hurdles here in Norman. He followed up his 110-hurdles title with another dominating performance in the 400 hurdles. Thornton laid down a personal-best 49.77 to take first place by five meters. The time is the second fastest in school history, trailing only Mark Jackson's 49.18 in 1992. Big 12 champion Adam Dailey claimed third with a 50.92, but Thornton's 20 points in two events has given the NU men a lead in the team race.

Couple interesting notes on Kirkland Thornton's jaunt through the 110 hurdles. It's a personal best and the top wind-aided time run in Nebraska history. I'm not going to lie, the dude was just flying. The wind was 2.3 m/s so it was just barely "aiding" him. The crazy part about it was Fourie was almost right beside him. I got the official word from freshman middle distance runner Erica Hamik on what happened during Fourie's race. He hit the hurdle so hard that it came over the top of him to tangle with the hurdle in front of him. Or at least that's what I am going with. Hate to see that happen to such a nice kid.
PA announcer just said Phipps still leads through two flights of the triple jump.

Interesting race here. Called back for a false start. Called back for a block slip. Two Huskers in the lead until Lehann Fourie hit the third-to-last hurdle. Kirkland Thornton went on to win with a wind-aided 13.47 while Tyrel Ross got third with a 13.86, but you have to feel for Fourie on that one. He hit the hurdle so hard it some how ended up in front of him entangle with the next hurdle.
I believe Burney ended up fourth in the pole vault, but I'm not sure on his final mark yet.

Nebraska's 4x100 relay didn't get an automatic spot in the NCAA Championships, but it wasn't for a lack of effort. Scott Wims ran a great anchor leg, closing a five-meter gap to bring the Huskers into a battle for second. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough as NU finished with a time of 39.91, just .04 of a second behind third place.

Mistake on my part. McGruder's jump was just barely wind-aided (+2.1). So her mark is the fifth-best wind-aided jump in NU history, but doesn't count in top 10. Still a great jump on her part and she will still be headed to the NCAA Championships for the second time in her career. For those of you that don't know, any wind from 0.0 to 2.0 meters per second is considered negligible. From 2.0 to 4.0 m/s is considered wind-aided and anything over 4.0 m/s is an illegal wind. Back in my track days the wind blew 8.0 m/s....all the time...and all the way around the track.....and it was uphill both ways.

McGruder moved into the finals in fourth position, but the wind changed a little and all the athletes struggled in the finals. Only one athlete moved in front of McGruder so her fifth-place finish automatically qualifies her for the NCAA Championships. The jump also moves her into Nebraska's top-10 performance list, but you'll have to read the recap for that. I can't spill all the good details in the blog.
Elsewhere, NU's large contingent of five athletes in the men's pole vault just got into action. The women's high jumpers are warming up, so NU should pick up a qualifier there in Epley Bullock.

After finishing just one place short of automatically qualifying in the long jump yesterday, McGruder is on a mission in the triple jump today. Jumping in what is by far the best flight, McGruder busted out a huge personal-best jump. Her old PR was 42-8 1/4, but on her first attempt today she notched a 43-5 1/4. She scratches on her second attempt and faces five Texas A&M jumpers in her flight, so she has her work cut out to advance to the finals.

Well we are out of the blocks on the second day. The men's hammer starts the day, an event the NU men have excelled in. Keith Lloyd is throwing in the third flight of prelims right now and had a decent toss on his first attempt (not sure of the actual mark). Eric Peterson is currently leading the event and will likely be in the finals. Brett Suckstorf fouled out.
The women's shot put also just got underway. Kacie Sharp and Amanda Latsch will have great weather conditions to throw in. Temperatures have reached the mid 80s again, while it's maybe a little more breezy today, but overall a great day to be a Husker.

Great performance by Lukas Hulett in the men's 400. He ran down Texas Tech's Rodney Mims in the last 15 meters to pass him and finish second in the heat. The move proved to be a huge one as Hulett earned the eighth and final spot in tomorrow's final by beating Mims by .01 of a second.
Blaire Dinsdale was equally as impressive in the women's 800. Her 2:09 put her second in her heat and also automatically advanced her to tomorrow's finals. As of right now, the Huskers have six runners in the finals and the 4x100 relay. Hopefully we can add a couple more in the men's 400 hurdles, which is always a strong event for the Huskers.

The Huskers went 3-for-3 in the men's 110 hurdles as all three Nebraska athletes advanced into tomorrow's finals. Lehann Fourie posted a wind-aided 13.64 in the second heat to finish second, while Kirkland Thornton won the third heat with a wind-aided 13.63 and Tyrell Ross claimed second with 13.96. I figure I could probably run a wind-aided 25.43 for the 110. No hurdles, though....and it would have to be hurricane wind.
Willar is in the final five for the pole vault, as the women still battle for the top spot. The bar is at 13-10 right now. Paul Hamilton finished fourth in the high jump with a mark of 6-11 3/4, as that event just wrapped up.

Enough references to basketball for one day.
Leandra McGruder just made the finals of the women's long jump. She's been working with pretty good conditions as it's turned into a great day here in Oklahoma. I am expecting big things this weekend and think there will be a couple Huskers not currently in the top-five that will get into the top group and lock up a spot.
Well I better get going... need to make some last minute pickups here in Lincoln before I depart for Wayne to get stuff set up for this weekend.
Talk to you all next week... GO BIG RED!

Musings from Lubbock: If your plane has a hole in the engine, I would suggest exploring other travel options. Thus is the case for 17 members of the NU Track and Field team still trying to return home victorious from the Big XII Championships. We have made it to Dallas today and are hopeful of arriving in Lincoln around noon. We were trying to find some vans and drive home through the night but Nigel Bigbee, Mark Colligan, and Kris Grimes abandoned us and went home without checking on our wellbeing. Guess equipment is more important than us! Please alert the appropriate media that Jeremy Foote will be available to set up individual interviews with managers Eric Johnson, D.J. Hubbard, Jordan Spirk, and Tyler Thoerner immediately following our state patrol escort into town. All of the gentlemen will be able to speak freely about Coach Matt Martin's calm under pressure response about the current travel crisis and how lucky we were that he had kept Karl's (bus driver) phone number. They will not be taking questions regarding what they did after the returned to the Holiday Inn last night. That will be addressed at a later time by the Buddy Holly Historical Society.
Now for my musings- Lincoln should look into building a new urbanism housing district and retail area around campus. Lubbock has a great new neighborhood being built from scratch right next to campus.
While I did see a statue of Buddy Holly most people in town couldn't tell me where his gravesite was? Guess it's "Bye Bye Buddy" to the memories of your hometown.
River Smith's Catfish and Chicken has the best catfish I've ever had.
Anybody know where we can display 21 big glass trophies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Compared to the sunny weather yesterday... the weather is horrible today... its raining, cold and windy. Feels like a mid-April day in Lincoln and not a summer day in Texas. This may turn into a benefit for the Huskers as we should be used to weather like this. No promises on keeping the blog up to date as the media area is outside and I may be taking cover soon in the team tent. Check live results at www.flashresults.com

On another note... this my first trip to Lubbock and I've very impressed with the Terry and Linda Fuller track. Facility looks great and the right field wall of the baseball field is within probably 25 feet of the third curve of the track... should be interesting tomorrow to see if there is a homerun down the right-field line that makes it way onto the track.
Just had Chick-Fil-A wrap and an orange for lunch... re-entergized for the rest of the multis. Coming up next... men's high jump and women's shot put in the multis. The Husker women will also be throwing the hammer at 2 p.m. and then the men at 5 p.m. Lara Crofford will run the 10K tonight at 8:15... hopefully it cools down a bit by then.
